I don’t know about you guys, but if I’ve spent two minutes on YouTube, I’ve spent two hours on YouTube. I click on one innocent link to a genre-bending cover of a popular song and suddenly it’s 25 videos later and I somehow ended up watching a man dancing to “Livin’ On A Prayer” or listening to a song entirely about Narwhals.
There’s also a different kind of YouTube spiral you can go on, and that’s finding a YouTube personality that makes you laugh so hard that you end up watching every video they ever uploaded in one sitting. I figured something good should come of my many hours lost to YouTube, so I’m here to talk to you about some of the lovely ladies I’ve come across. Specifically, the queer ladies.
Now, I’m sure you’ve all heard of Hannah Hart, lesbian leading lady of My Drunk Kitchen. She was actually one of the first YouTube personalities I followed, and since I first started watching, her channel has grown and become wildly popular on the internet machine. In fact, she even has a second channel where she shares more personal stories about her experience with coming out and more.
And I KNOW you know AfterEllen contributor Dana Piccoli, who wrote/sang the fabulous Ballad of Rosewood. But Hannah and Dana aren’t the only queer gals taking over the Tube. Here are three channels I think are worth checking out.
Bria & Chrissy
I mentioned this duo once before when I wrote a post inspired by one of their videos. Their channel is a combination of cover songs, silly videos, and inspiring true stories.
They also do cute but relevant songs that are fun additions to the LGBT movement, and no matter if it’s a cover or an original song, there’s no doubt that these ladies are a talented team.
(Good luck getting that one out of your head.)
You might know Hart from her “Watermelon” video that went viral. In it, she hilariously responded to the surely infuriating question, “If you like women so much, why don’t you dress like one?” However, what you might not have realized is that she is always that hilarious. She is a confident, clever, witty, one-of-a-kind personality. She’s also musically talented, as it turns out. (Which I suppose I should have guessed. HartBeat is a very apropos nickname.) Her videos are creative and they’re all different. They include personal stories, skits, or sometimes, a combination of the two.Her most recent video is one of my favorites to date, because I have been loving this season of American Horror Story, but honestly I think anyone would appreciate her usually wanky and always sarcastic take on things.
Rose Ellen Dix
The third and final YouTube channel I will try to coerce you into joining me in my obsession over is that of Rose Ellen Dix. Her channel is a little more similar to Bria and Chrissy, but she puts out videos every week. She makes a variety of videos, sometimes solo shenanigans and sometimes hilarious videos with her girlfriend Rosie. (Yes, they’re Rose and Rosie. Yes, they’re just as precious as their names imply.)
Being terrible at charades has never been so cute.
Also, on a completely shallow note, their most recent video is entitled “Superkiss Part 2.” It is the sequel to a similar video from last year, and is, indeed, a super kiss.
I can’t really narrow down what I love about these two into a coherent sentence. All I know is that the first time I saw one of their videos together, I was swooning at their cuteness, laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face, and plotting ways to get to England and hang out with them some way, some how.
Until then, I’ll just watch them get drunk hang out with other YouTube celebrities, like Hannah Hart.
