The Weekly Geek: Judi Dench and Gillian Anderson join up for a zombie comedy

I always get excited when things I love get combined in entirely novel ways: for example, “zombie comedy,” Judi Dench, and Gillian Anderson. Let’s throw Ian McKellen and British comedy in general in there for good measure. Roll it up together, and what do you get? A full-length film, based on the E’gads, Zombies! short that played at Cannes last year, is called The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet. I’m going to let that sit for a second. Gillian Anderson. Judi Dench. Period costumes. Zombies. Wacky comedy. Buxom strumpets. This sounds like a wonderful, nerdy fever dream that I’d very much like to have.

From The Mary Sue:

It will be directed by Matthew Butler, who co-wrote the first script with Tori Hart. Cameras roll in Scotland later this year for the 18th century zombie romp through Upper Trollop.
Upper Trollop? Well, where else? The plot synopsis is also worth reading:
… [William Filthe] was the younger brother of the family and therefore his chances of actually achieving anything in his life were slim to middling at best. Not that this mattered to him of course, for he was in love with the beautiful but slightly terrifying Vanity Banks, and had decided that as soon as she stopped throwing vegetables at him, they should marry. The reason Vanity threw vegetables at William was because he was poor. She was rich and everybody loved her, so why on earth would she marry a poet who spent his time at her window spouting his ludicrous poetry?

So, she decided to marry Richard Filthe, William’s affluent elder brother and all-round bad egg. So William, devastated, decides to leave England and live as a monk, turning his back on life and love. On the morning of his departure however, he finds his household deserted and one of his servants, Sandwich, half eaten. Racing through the town to save the woman he loves, he discovers that Upper Trollop has been infected by an illness, turning all it’s inhabitants into crazed creatures and making them all rather … bitey …

I know zombies are getting a bit overplayed in geek culture these days, but surely, this kind of approach will bring something very different to the table. Also, this is clearly the work of casting genius – although I’ll freely admit to the fact I’d watch Gillian Anderson emoting to a tree branch, let alone Dame Judi Dench.

What do you think, geeks?
