No more waiting for Goya

The Milos Forman film Goya’s Ghosts, which is about, um, Francisco Goya, finally has a North American distributor. It screened at Cannes 2006 but has been in limbo since then.

The Saul Zaentz production, slated for a summer U.S. platform theatrical release, stars [Javier] Bardem as a member of the clergy during the Spanish Inquisition who becomes obsessed with one of its targets, Goya’s muse (Natalie Portman). The story follows their personal trials from the late 18th century through the tortured girl’s release from prison after Napoleon’s invasion of Spain.
Torture? Clergy? The Spanish Inquisition? Sounds charming. I guess we could have expected Portman to continue to take on edgy roles, considering the praise for her performance in V for Vendetta. But, well, nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
