Emma Watson conjured up the most dough in the ‘00s

The Guinness Book of Records recently calculated that Emma Watson, of all seven Harry Potter movies fame, was the highest-grossing actress from 2000-2009, whose film work grossed $5.4 billion worldwide. The 19-year-old actress beat out the likes of Angelina Jolie (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Wanted), Kate Winslet (The Reader, Revolutionary Road) and Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia,The Devil Wears Prada), whose movies were among the top grossing of the decade.

It’s hardly surprising that the actress who plays the adorably nerdy, incredibly talented Hermione Granger Expelliarmus-ed the competition — she obviously does that on a daily basis in Hogwarts, and Hollywood is no different. Since the release of the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Watson’s stellar performance has put us in a Confundus Charm and made it impossible not to become immediately and unequivocally obsessed with her.

Apart from the six HP films of the 2000s, which grossed roughly $900 million per movie, Watson also lent her voice to the character of Princess Pea in the animated flick, The Tale of Despereaux.

The second highest-grossing actress of the ‘00s? Dame Maggie Smith, aka bad ass Professor Minerva McGonagall, also of Harry Potter fame, won the title and solidified a HP takeover of the world — or maybe just the box office.

While The Guinness Book only counted Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix in their calculations, the Half Blood Prince was the second-highest grossing film of 2009 at over $300 million, and the two-part seventh film, Deathly Hallows, will undoubtedly fare just as well, if not better.

Though Watson currently studies at Brown University in Rhode Island and has said she may leave acting forever after the seven-part Harry Potter saga concludes, she’ll live in our hearts forever as Hermione Granger.

What’s your take on the Harry Potter shut-down of the global box office in the ‘00s?
