Hilary Swank is a star — but you knew that already

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday — doesn’t she look cute?

During the dedication ceremony, Hilary recounted with tears, “I remember my mom using a roll of quarters to call agents from a pay phone and telling agents they should sign me.”

Swank is starring in the movie Freedom Writers, opening this weekend, about “a young teacher who inspires her class of at-risk students to learn tolerance, apply themselves, and pursue education beyond high school.” Although it’s getting mostly good reviews, and I’ll probably see it when it comes out on DVD, I have to ask: does the world really need another movie about a white teacher who inspires a group of poor, downtrodden (mostly) children or color to aim higher? Even if she is Hilary Swank?
