“Twilight” and other teen films lead the MTV Movie Award nominations

I suppose I shouldn’t be too judgmental about the nominees for the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, The people have spoken, and they made me feel really old, but democracy is a wonderful thing, right?

For the first year ever, MTV allowed viewers to choose the nominees for their annual movie awards, allowing a younger audience who may have been alienated by the Oscars to voice their opinions. Not surprisingly, vampire romance phenom Twilight raked in the most nominations with seven. Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire got six nominations and long shots The Dark Knight, Iron Man and High School Musical 3: Senior Year round out the “Best Movie” category. While Slumdog would get my vote (Oh, hey Freida Pinto), I am pretty sure Twilight will take the cake. Pinto made the lineup for the “Breakthrough Performance Female” selections that also include teeny-bopper trio Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus and Nick and Nora’s Kat Denning and Mamma Mia!‘s Amanda Seyfried.

Along with Twilight and Slumdog stars, Angelina Jolie made several categories for her role in Wanted, including “Best Female Performance,” “Best Kiss” (shared with James McAvoy) and “Best WTF Moment” for the film’s “curved bullet kill.” What is it about Jolie and guns that we all can’t seem to get enough of? Sigh. Oscar winner Kate Winslet got a “Best Female Performance” nomination for her intense role in the The Reader, Taraji P. Henson for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Anne Hathaway for the movie you couldn’t pay me to see, Bride Wars, and Twilight‘s Kristen Stewart round out the category. Kate, you once again would get my vote.

Two gay kisses made it into the “Best Kiss” category, but unfortunately they weren’t gay lady ones. James Franco and Sean Penn made the cut for their smooch(es) in Milk, and the much-less-than-romantic kiss (or slobber) between Paul Rudd and Thomas Lennon in I Love You Man also wooed MTV viewers. Freida Pinto and Dev Patel’s Slumdog kiss, the I-want-to-drink-your-blood-so-badly kiss between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, and Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron‘s High School Musical 3 kiss round out the category. My favorite category is the “Best WTF Moment”, which includes some comedy gems like Kristen Bell breaking up with Jason Segal while he’s awkwardly naked in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Hey, KBell, I’m missin’ you), Amy Poehler peeing in the sink (one of the high points in Baby Mama) and Ayush Mahesh Khedekar jumping in the shed of poop in an effort to meet his favorite celebrity in Slumdog.

Andy Samberg will host the May 31 awards show and, so far, our favorite rapper Eminem is slated to perform. Hopefully they will schedule many more people to make up for having to sit through his set.
