It seems perfectly apropos that just a few days after marriage equality became the law of the land, that the long awaited same sex romance and family drama Jenny’s Wedding would finally release a trailer. The film, starring Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel as a same sex couple, has been in the works for some time, and even had an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to complete the film.
Katherine stars as Jenny, a successful young woman who lives with her lady love Kitty (Alexis) but has yet to come out to her family as gay. (They think that she and Kitty are roomates.) Her family keeps hounding her about when she’s going to find a nice man to marry, and eventually Jenny can’t handle the weight of her giant secret anymore. She comes out and announces her engagement to Kitty, something that her family struggles to deal with. The excellent Tom Wilkinson and Linda Emond star as Jenny’s parents, with Grace Gummer rounding out the family as Jenny’s sister.
When we caught up with Katherine Heigl at last year’s Trevor Live, she had this to say about the film:
“Jenny’s Wedding is a really beautiful story, wonderfully written from every perspective. From the parent’s perspective, they’d never really gone there, their minds were unaware of the possibility because it’s not like they have gay or lesbian friends. They have to educate themselves, to open their minds and consider possibilities they’d never even considered.”
I don’t know about you, but I’m totally down to see Izzie Stevens and Rory Gilmore Heigl and Bledel play a couple. But seriously, it’s easy to forget in this time of great acceptance, love and rainbow Facebook profiles, that some queer folks still really struggle with coming out to their families. Jenny’s Wedding might be a family drama, but it’s also about finding the strength to live your truth.
Jenny’s Wedding opens in theaters on July 31st and VOD on August 1st. If you’re in LA, it’s playing Outfest on July 10.
