New Music Tuesday: 3-9-2010

Hello my darlings! It’s Tuesday and I can practically feel spring coming around the corner, handing me a pint of cider and a gift certificate to H&M. Yes today will be a good day. Now, let’s see if it will be a good week for music, shall we?

OK, so this is a re-release of greatest hits also including some songs from the Runaways days. For a beginner fan this is a great way to get yourself acquainted with true rock goddess pioneers.

Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart actually sing on a couple of the tracks and you know what? I don’t mind it! More than that, ever since the trailer came out, I’ve been contemplating my attraction to K-Stew when she rocks a mullet.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we’ve got Anais Mitchell’s gorgeous folk strumming and slide guitar. With a voice similar to the lovechild of Joanna Newsom and Alison Krauss she is uniquely beautiful. She’s joined by Righteous Babe founder Ani Difranco and Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon. This doesn’t make me want to shake what my mama gave me, but I absolutely love this.

Singer-songwriter Beth Thornley’s latest album has been available on iTunes since February, but since I just became aware of her musical stylings and the physical album is now available (and she’s a total babe) here she is on NMT! She’s got the sweet femininity of Mazzy Star but also the pop rock sensibility of Sheryl Crow. According to her bio, she’s been compared to everyone — I just wanted to add two more to that list. Also, looks-wise she’s like a combo of Piper Perabo and Jo from The Facts of Life. You’re welcome.

Honorable mentions for this week include: Danger Mouse and James Mercer‘s side project, Broken Bells. Also check out The Morning Benders, Gorillaz, Frightened Rabbit, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix album, Valleys of Neptune.
