Rolling Stone’s top albums of 2006: 10% women, 100% predictable

Rolling Stone magazine has announced its take on the Top 50 albums of 2006, and it seriously bums me out to report that only 5 of the 50 are by individual women artists (and one by an all-woman band), though there are a handful of bands fronted by women.

The lucky 5 are:

#6: Cat Power The Greatest #19: The Dixie Chicks Taking the Long Way #21: Regina Spektor Begin to Hope #45: Neko Case Fox Confessor Brings the Flood #48: Lady Sovereign Public Warning Granted, they are really great albums by really cool women, but can’t we do better than 10%? These lousy stats bring to mind the NME magazine controversy a few weeks ago. Wouldn’t it be cool if one of the women listed above responded to this list by posting her own Lily Allen-style rant about the lack of respect for women in rock?

I nominate Natalie Maines.
