New Music Tuesday: 8-4-09

Fans of lesbian singer/songwriter Catie Curtis will dig her new album, Hello Stranger, which drops today. It includes a duet with Mary Gauthier on the title track, and has a full-string band playing all the tunes behind her.

Hello Stranger isn’t exactly new material, though, as five of the tracks are covers of artists like Cat Stevens and Nina Simone and reworkings of some of Curtis’ older songs like “Passing Through.” However, if you love her folky style and can’t wait for the new LP, Sweet Life, to come out next month, then Hello Stranger might be a good pick for you.

Here’s what else is new today:

Anjulie is Canada’s hottest new export. If you’ve heard her single, “Boom,” you will know the Guyanese singer has a style that’s a cross between Duffy and Santigold.

Speaking of Santigold, the singer is only one of Philly MC Amanda Blank’s hot guests on her debut LP. If you like Lykke Li, The Cool Kids or Spank Rock, you will love her electro-hop, like on sexified single “Like You Better.”

A former member of The Blow, which is now just queer musician Khaela Marich‘s solo project, Jona Bectolt has brought in Claire L. Evans to become YACT as a pair of dance-music making eccentrics. They make uplifting tunes that will have you clapping and memorizing words in no time.

It’s quite a dancey week for new music. What are you getting down to?
