Morning Brew: Thursday, Jan. 14

We have to start this morning with some serious business regarding how you can help with the disaster in Haiti.

Men carry a woman from the wreckage of a building following Haiti’s 7.0 quake.

From MTV News: In the wake of Tuesday’s devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti, singer Wyclef Jean has issued an urgent plea for help for his struggling homeland.

“Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced,” Jean wrote on his website.

Your help is certainly needed in this already AIDS/HIV-ravaged nation.

And as ABC News reports, “Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and the population of 9 million already faces high rates of tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, viral and respiratory disease.”

You can watch Wyclef Jean and author Edwige Danticat both talking to Anderson Cooper about this catastrophe in their homeland on CNN:

The Organization of American States Disaster Relief program is one of the most established relief programs in Haiti. They support Wyclef Jean’s Yele Foundation. You can find out how you can help this already impoverished nation at http://www.PanAmericanRelief.org.

Ways you can help via texting right now include:

1. Text “YELE” to 501501 to donate $5 for Haitian Relief (it goes to the Yele Foundation)

2. Text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 (it goes to the American Red Cross).

And for further ways to help, the Huffington Post has a good list of aid organizations you may consider.

Now, on to the fluff.

On last night’s episode Cougar Town, Ellie (Christa Miller) has a dream that she and Jules (Courteney Cox) killed her husband, buried him in the backyard and got married to each other. They come close to making out in bed — until Ellie’s husband comes in, covered in dirt and bearing an axe, screaming “You thought you could get away with it!” Ellie, unfortunately, wakes from her dream, looks at her hubby lying next to her and says, “You ruin everything!” Don’t blame him, Christa — it’s the writers’ fault.

Seattle Weekly featured barkeep/reality star Sirbrina Guerrero in their First Call column this week. You may remember her from the second season of A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila and the very public, controversial kiss Sirbrina and her girlfriend shared at a Mariners game a few years ago. Apparently she makes some really strong drinks and is the resident celebrity bartender.

Make sure to catch Lady Gaga live on The Oprah Winfrey Show tomorrow, where she’ll show you her life on tour and will also perform on Oprah’s stage. Does Oprah allow burning corpses on set? Crossing my fingers!

Fans of the TNT show Leverage are speculating that expert thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf) may be bisexual after she seemed to take a liking to a Tara (Jeri Ryan) on this week’s episode, “The Runaway Job.” Riesgraf says her character is a tomboy, but nothing else has been said about her sexuality from anyone on the show yet.

Did you hear that more “older women” are coming out as lesbians? The Minneapolis Star-Tribune gets to the bottom of why this happens. In short: Emotions, feminism, sexual fluidity. There’s no mention of the frequency of Law & Order: SVU marathons or Mariska Hargitay, but I’m pretty sure that also has something to do with it.

A handful of queer women have pieces included in the 2010 edition of Best Sex Writing, including Betty Dodson and Violet Blue. Is that reflective of who has the best sex? Probably.

Speculation of Lady Sovereign‘s sexuality continues. Watch this fun clip from Celebrity Big Brother around minute 2 and hear her retort to Ivana Trump‘s telling her that she’ll be inspired to work out when she meets a handsome and well-muscled man. (Thanks Megan!)

Rihanna fan? Check out a promo for her appearance on Logo’s Pop Lab next week.

Check out this great photo of Kim Ann Foxman (DJ and member of Hercules and Love Affair) from this month’s CANDY magazine. Did “I Want Candy” just pop up in anyone else’s head?

And while you’re on the internet today, support The Trevor Project and vote for them in the Chase Community Giving Project.

See you Friday!
