Lez Dish It Out 1.24

Welcome back to Lez Dish It Out! If you’ve been tuning into our Instagram stories, you’ll know this news roundup was the accomplishment of a steadfast commitment to lesbian journalism in the face booze-driven West Hollywood shenanigans. Better late than never, right? Lena Waithe and Wife Split

Just two months after their secret City Hall ceremony, Lena Waithe and Alana Mayo have split. In a press statement, they described it in amicable terms, and requested privacy. Rumors are swirling on social media, alleging that Lena cheated, bought fancy shit for secret girlfriends, and that the marriage was a hail mary to save the relationship. Crazy rumors like that don’t really square with Lena as the image of down-to-earth but brilliant celesbian hero. Thoughts and prayers for us (oh, and them) at this difficult time! Katie Sowers Takes the Superbowl

Katie Sowers, the assistant offensive coach for the 49ers, is the second woman employed in the NFL as a full-time coach, and this year she will be the first out lesbian to coach at the Superbowl. Bisexual comedian Franqi French was named one of the two winners of the StandUp NBC search for diverse comedians. For the first time in its 16-year run, NBC named two winners. She and the other winner, Rene Vaca, have both been awarded talent holding deals with NBCUniversal. StandUp NBC alumni include Deon Cole, Hasan Minhaj, Dulce Sloan, Tone Bell, Michelle Buteau and Amanda Seales, among others. Kesha Releases New Music Kesha released two new songs in advance of her new album High Road, out January 31st. “My Own Dance,” is classic electro pop from Kesha, complete with her signature unapologetic lyrics. “Resentments” is a stripped-down alt-country tune that features genius Brian Wilson, rising star Sturgill Simpson and Wrabel. It was all shot by hand on Kesha’s own iPhone 11 Pro.

Amythyst Kiah – Best American Roots Song – Black Myself (Our Native Daughters)

Amythyst Kiah, a bluegrass flat-picking guitarist and clawhammer banjist is getting the attention she deserves. This follows an album release and tour with Our Native Daughters, the Americana supergroup made of Kiah, Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell. Her original song is up against new material from greats like Vince Gill, Roseanne Cash and bluegrass supergroup I’m With Her, but we know who we’re rooting for.

Tanya Tucker, Brandi Carlile – Song Of The Year, Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Song – “Bring My Flowers Now”

Tanya Tucker has been nominated for 14 Grammys, her first almost 50 years ago. Now she’s back, thanks in large part to Brandi Carlile, who produced her latest album, which is her first new record in over 15 years. While I’m Livin is also up for Best Country Album. Kudos to Carlile for the intergenerational sisterhood. Tucker’s relative anonymity is criminal for someone as accomplished — she had the misfortune of being middle-aged and female. It’s fitting for her to be back on the scene now, as Brandi’s supergroup The Highwomen has been campaigning so vocally for parity and pay equality for women in country.

Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile – Best Country Duo/Group Performance – “Common”

Brandi Carlile’s collaborative genius resulted in another Grammy nom, which she shares with songwriter Maren Morris. “Common” is about the ways we are divided in spite of having so much in common. It’s a beautiful pop song, but when Brandi’s bold alto comes through with that twangy vibrato, it earns its Country categorization. Here’s the two of them performing at 2019 the CMAs.

Ellen DeGeneres – Comedy Album – Relatable

Ellen’s Netflix special this year marked a return to standup that was long overdue. Relatable goes up against Dave Chapelle’s triumphant and characteristically controversial return to standup, Sticks and Stones, as well as one by Aziz Ansari (I thought he was cancelled), Jim Gaffigan, and Trevor Noah’s. It’s concerning that Ellen was the only woman considered in the category, since 2019 was a huge year for female standups. But luckily her competition this year was not even close to being on her level.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeOAnHV2SYw Ellen Honored by Kate McKinnon at the Golden Globes On the topic of award shows, The best part of the 2020 Golden Globes was also, so far, the best thing about 2020: when Ellen received the Carol Burnett award. Kate delivered a super cute, super sincere tribute. Ellen was an inspiration and an icon to Kate. She said “If it wasn’t for Ellen I might have gone on thinking I was alien.”

It was also a great week for Kate McKinnon because the day after the Golden Globes, Kate got to celebrate her 36th birthday on the Ellen show. She got a tiny bit emotional telling Ellen all over again that she’s the funniest person alive and one of the bravest, too.
