Katie Sowers Becomes the First Lesbian Coach in Super Bowl History

Less than a month into the new decade and lesbians are already making history. This time, we’re making our mark in the sport’s world as Katie Sowers, the offensive assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers, becomes the first female coach and the first lesbian in Super Bowl history.

Sowers began her football career in college. She played in the Women’s Football Alliance for the West Michigan Mayhem and the Kansas City Titans. In 2013, she won the IFAF Women’s World Championship. But a hip injury ended her playing days. That didn’t stop her, though. She interned for the Atlanta Falcons in 2016 before she moved to the 49ers the following year.

Sowers started as a seasonal offensive assistant before her promotion to assistant offensive assistant last year. She became only the second woman in NFL history to hold a full-time coaching position. And the first to come out as a lesbian.

Prior to the 2017 season, Sowers came out as a lesbian. And when asked why she’s discussing her sexuality now, Sowers told OutSports that “the more we can create an environment that welcomes all types of people… the more we can help ease the pain and burden that many carry everyday.” Sowers has no doubt become an inspiration to many off the field. But how is she on the field? “Katie is a baller, 100 percent,” says 49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin.

She sure is. Just a year after her promotion, the 49ers head to the Super Bowl after defeating the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday. Will she become the first female coach and lesbian to win a Super Bowl? It’s entirely possible!

Sowers has been complimented for her understanding of the game and the positive energy she’s been able to give the players she coaches. We’ll just have to wait and see on February 2nd when the 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs. And even if Sowers’ team loses, she’s already made her mark. And it definitely won’t be the last we see of her. She has her sights set on becoming a head coach in the NFL. Will she be the first lesbian NFL coach? She just might be.

And that wasn’t enough Sowers also has a twin sister. Liz also happens to be a lesbian. She plays for the KC Titans and is in a relationship with two-time NWSL champion and now retired soccer player Jen Buczkowski.

That’s just the power of lesbianism, ladies.
