Female-led films earn more than male-led films, according to researchers from Creative Artists Agency and Shift7.
The study found the top movies starring women earned more than male-led films. This was true for movies with budgets of less than $10 million or more than $100 million. They based their findings on the analysis of 350 films listed on the data and technology provider, Gracenote.
Female-led Hollywood movies accounted for about a quarter of the top 2017 films, however. A study from San Diego State University found that number to be a drop from the year before. It seems like Hollywood is missing some revenue potential by not focusing more on female-led films, aren’t they?
We’ve talked a lot on AfterEllen about the enormous potential, still lost on Hollywood, for lesbian movies to appeal to the general public. The fact that female-led films are already the ones generating the most revenue is the first step. Having two female co-stars in a romantic relationship, if our past research is any indicator, could be an even bigger boon for the film industry. Audiences are ready for it, so where are all the mainstream lesbian movies, Hollywood?
