New Study Finds 1 in 4 Teen Girls Self-Harm

New research suggests that the rate for self-injuries among teen girls is twice as high as the rate for boys. Researchers used data from the 2015 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. They sought to estimate the prevalence of nonsuicidal self-injury among adolescents ages 14—18. They looked at responses from 64,671 public high school students from 11 states.

The rates of self-injury among teens were highest in Idaho, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Nevada. Delaware had the lowest rates of self-injury for both boys and girls. The study also found that the prevalence of self-harm was highest among 14-year-olds.

This information is in addition to their findings that teen girls have much higher rates of suicide than boys. According to that study, the number of ER visits among girls between ages 10 and 14 rose from 110 visits per 100,000 in 2009 to 318 visits per 100,000 in 2015. Older teenage girls had the highest ratio with 633 visits per 100,000 in 2015. The study also pointed out that the numbers are not reflective of the problem, since the study only counted ER visits and not doctor’s offices or unreported cases.
