Lez Dish It Out: Your Monthly Les/Bi News Roundup

Attention all hibernating lesbians and bisexuals, spring is officially here! Climb out from under your blankets, get your asses to Dinah, and let’s soak up some sunshine. March has been a busy month as we dust the snow off, march for our lives, and fill our martini glasses, and get ready to vote for Miranda.

So what’s been happening in lesbo-land and in the bi-beyond the last few week? Lez find out! Cynthia Nixon is running for governor of New York and gal pals are so in. In case you’ve been living under a rock, I’m here to tell you that Miranda is ready to fulfill her true calling on politics. We all love her, we all want to claim her as ours, and regardless of the label she does or does not want to slap onto herself and whether she’ll be the first lesbian, second bisexual, etc etc., elected governor, this is HUGE.

After she announced her candidacy, of course the media frenzy went wild. The whole “unqualified lesbian” debacle really only catapulted Nixon’s brand, because she took total ownership and her campaign started selling swag. Grab your button here. In this Donald Trump age, any celebrity candidacy is bound to spark an actual intelligent conversation about qualifications, and Nixon has plenty. Any debate as to how seriously she’s taking this can be silenced by just a quick glance at her Twitter.

As if it’s any surprise, Miranda came to play.

In case you were wondering where that rest of the girls were going to come into play, both Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) have officially endorsed their on screen BFF. The word’s still out on Samantha.

Here’s my favorite line from the introduction of this piece:

Already you know there isn’t a mirror the television is holding up to you; there isn’t a child like you on the screen. Not in the 1990s. Not yet.
Also, while making her rounds during promotion for her new film Ready Player One, Waithe stopped by to chat with the ladies on The View and had a few words to say about celebrities who are hesitant to come out of the closet. She encourages celebrities who want to keep a lid on their private lives to come out and be a “beacon of light” for young people who struggle to see themselves anywhere in the world. Allure is available for streaming now Evan Rachel Wood’s newest film made waves back during its promotion because of the steamy scenes between her and a significantly younger girl. The film explores the dynamics of two abusive relationships, one between a woman and a young girl, and one between that woman and an older man.

The psycho-sexual thriller is getting a mixed bag of reviews, and now it’s available for streaming on YouTube so that we can all decide for ourselves. If you give it a watch, let us know what you think!

Here’s the trailer:

https://youtu.be/e5AzIdfdJ_g Lesbian couple and their children die during car crash On Wednesday, an SUV containing two moms Jennifer Jean Hart and Sarah Margaret Hart and three of their foster children, Martin, 19, Abigail, 14, and Jeremiah, 14, careened off a cliff in California, leaving all five of the family members dead. The three kids were all found outside of the vehicle, an indication they were wearing no seatbelts, and no skid marks were found on the road.

The entire accident is shrouded in mystery, as their other three children, Devonte, Hannah, 16, and Sierra, 12, are presumed to have been in the vehicle but as of the time this article was written, have not been found. A search is underway.

You might remember Devonte from a photo of him sobbing in a police officer’s arms back in 2014 during the protests in Ferguson,

We’ll keep you informed as we uncover more information. The Good Fight is back and worth the CBS All Access subscription The spin-off of CBS’s beloved series The Good Wife, starring Christine Baranski, made waves as one of the first shows to exclusively stream from the CBCsubscription-basedd service. The show advertised Maia, Rose Leslie from Game of Thrones, as a lesbian lead, and she continues this season as a third of the trio of women who catapult this show forward.

Season two continues to explore a group of liberal lawyers adjusting to life in Trump’s America, taking on cases and scandals that, like the ones in its predecessor, are ripped from real-time headlines. Maia’s sexuality isn’t thoroughly explored, but rather is just part of the fabric that’s woven into an already established character, which is refreshing to see. The first four episodes of season two are available for streaming on CBS All Access now. Walmart is moving Cosmopolitan out of check-out lines I know I know. You’re thinking, “Isn’t this a straight girl magazine? Why should I care?” But, this is a big deal, and a dangerous filtration of sexual media. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation has been pressuring the super store to become more “family-friendly and sexploitation-free”.

So stores like Kroger are pulling magazines that advertise AR-15s from their shelves, and Walmart is more worried about us all becoming hypersexualized. Yes, this powerful female brand is full of content that’s mostly geared toward straight women. But, I was at the hair salon recently and flipped through a recent issue for the first time in over five years, and one of their spreads about girl on top sex positions included a few featured graphics for girl-on-girl moves organically placed among the straight couples. That’s huge, and it’s important, and a reason we should support this publication.

Hayley Kiyoko’s album is out!!! The rising pop star’s debut album “Expectations” is finally here, and I’ve already listened to it three times while I’ve written this article. It’s full of pop anthems that deserve to have all of the radio time this summer, including some you’ve already heard, like “Curious” and “Feelings”. You might have your faces, but Kiyoko encourages listeners to play the album from top to bottom.

Our editor-in-chief recently chatted with Hayley over the phone about her new album and the inspiration behind some of the songs. Check it out here! Health department removes info on lesbian, bi women’s health concerns Happy bisexual health awareness month, am I right? WomensHealth.gov, a website maintained by the HHS office of Women’s Health has removed the page it once had devoted to the health of lesbian and bisexual women, including links to resources and advice on questions you should ask your healthcare provider.

The information was actually removed toward the end of fall 2017, but it was discovered this week in some reports by Sunlight Foundation’s Web Integrity Project. The website also has a list of over 100 health-related topics it covers, and “bisexual and lesbian health” was deleted completely from the list. Ramirez took over HRC Twitter feed and our hearts on Madam Secretary If you missed “Refuge”, the recent powerful episode of Madam Secretary where Sara Ramirez’s new character Kat beautifully comes out as bisexual, no worries. We’ll have a deeper dive into the scene and what this character means for bisexual representation on television. But in the meantime, go watch it, even if you haven’t seen the series from the beginning.

Following the airing of the pivotal episode, Ramirez also took over the HRC Twitter feed to celebrate Bi Health Month! Take a look at some of her tweets below.

While we wait, we can rewatch season one and then put the new trailer on repeat. Watch it closely, because there’s a lot to unpack and it moves insanely fast. Samira Wiley’s character Moira is back, and it looks like we’re going to get some gay goodness in season two, as we get a glimpse of a sexy scene right smack dab in the middle of the trailer. Watch it here:

Here they are watching Carol in bed together.

According to an exclusive from People Magazine, they’re just flirty friends. As long as they keep giving me joy on social media, I don’t really care.

Do yourself a favor and watch Emma Gonzalez’s riveting speech. Last weekend, we marched. Millions of us marched. About a hundred of us even marched in my tiny, tiny town in northwestern Pennsylvania. We marched, and the survivors of Parkland took even more steps toward saving us all. Emma Gonzalez stepped up to the podium and continued to show us why she has become the most recognizable face of this movement as she took us step by step through that day. Watch her speech in full here:

https://youtu.be/u46HzTGVQhg Netflix renews One Day at a Time This news pretty much speaks for itself, and we couldn’t be happier! News of the renewal broke on the 26th, exactly two months after the second season was released, and this funny, poignant comedy remains as current as ever, bringing heart and soul to issues that weigh heavy on minorities of every kind.
