Lez Dish It Out! The AfterEllen Les/Bi News Round-Up

Happy Friday to all of you lovelies! It’s been a fun and sexy week for lesbian and bi ladies on screen with the release of Carmilla and Sara Ramirez’s return to a major television role. Plus, Tessa Thompson defends her portrayal of a bisexual character in Marvel’s newest juggernaut film.

What are we waiting for? Lez get to it!

Sara Ramirez announced on her Twitter that she will be premiering a new character named Kat Sandoval on Madame Secretary this November. As you can see from the photo, there’s no question as to whether or not Ramirez will continue to use her stardom to represent strong, female LGBT characters. That hair. That tie. And that chain though. Swoon.

Here are some of the best Twitter reactions to the news. Fans are obviously excited, and we can’t blame them! Set your TiVo, ladies.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Ramirez’s new character is, “a brilliant political strategist, legendary in D.C. for her talent and for abruptly dropping out of politics until Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Téa Leoni) manages to coax her back into the State Department.”

We can’t wait to see what Kat Sandoval has in store for us.

Unless you’ve been living over in Lesbian La La Land, you are already familiar with Carmilla, the Canadian web series loosely based on the titular novel of the same name by Sheridan Le Fanu. The show ran for three seasons and concluded in 2016. Shortly after the final season ended, it was announced that a Carmilla movie was greenlit and would take place five years after the conclusion of the show.

Fast forward to this week, and fans finally get what they had been eagerly awaiting for an entire year: a full-length movie chock-full of vampire lesbian goodness!

Here’s the cast celebrating the screening of the film in Toronto:

You can watch The Carmilla Movie for $9.99 here. The site is also offering various bundles for your comprehensive viewing pleasure. Enjoy, my lady loves. In other drool-worthy news, MAXIM Australia has ranked Ruby Rose at, you guessed it, number one on their “Hot 100.” https://twitter.com/maxim_aus/status/923300523389829121

In typical modest fashion, Rose replied back enthusiastically and graciously.

Anyone know where I can get this cover blown up? Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to buy my copy of this magazine for my special drawer…

Marvel now has the attention of the bisexual community as drama swirled around Tessa Thompson’s depiction of the character Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. Twitter users were slamming the character for not being sexy enough. One “fan” called Valkyrie a “sexless, Marvel tomboy” and another was “disturbed by the sexlessness.”

Westworld star and bisexual Evan Rachel Wood promptly clapped back at the haters.

Conversation continued around the subject of Valkyrie’s sexuality in the comic books, which a writer addressed here. Tessa Thompson responded to this article:

Valkyrie is a side character, who doesn’t have enough interaction with other characters in the film to showcase her sexuality, which is a same and will hopefully be rectified in future Marvel installments. However, it’s admirable that Tessa Thompson tried to be faithful to this aspect of Valkyrie’s identity in portraying her, and her announcement will hopefully educate non-comic Marvel movie fans on Valkyrie and her origins.

Alabama has been saturating the news lately with its anti-LGBT politicians and subsequent rhetoric, so the timing is flawless for a new documentary entitled Alabama Bound that has been making its rounds on the film festival circuits. The film just made its east coast premiere at Newfest, New York’s LGBT film festival. In the documentary, three lesbian couples embark on three different yet equally impactful struggles, such as adoption proceedings and a custody battle.

Earlier this week, public radio station WBHM asked sat down with the team who created this film and co-director Carolyn Sherer why Alabama Bound decided to place its focus only on lesbians, and she responded:

The reason we are focusing on lesbians is that in the Birmingham area they’ve been previously invisible, and partly that may be because of the AIDS crisis and the attention that was placed on what was going on in in the ’80s in Birmingham.

When asked whether she thought Alabama would ever succeed in separating church and state, Sherer also said the following.

I think that churches are changing in Alabama. Ten years ago, there were no churches or few churches that really accepted gay people. Now we see many churches that are advocating for the gay community. So I do think it’s going to change.
A group of Aussie music artists announced earlier this month that they’re releasing a song per day through Thirty Days of Yes, a subscription based mixtape, leading up to Australia’s decision on marriage equality.

On Tuesday, singer Jen Cloher and her partner, Courtney Barnett released their love song “Numbers” for the cause. Barnett tweeted out the news on the day.

Cloher released an album earlier this year, which contains personal songs about her frustration over Australia’s laws, which insofar have prevented her from marrying her love. In an interview this week with the Detroit Metro Times, Cloher said of the politically charged album:

I didn’t set out writing an album about social politics. I just set out writing about what I care about and matters to me and that’s translated into this really rewarding experience of playing songs to audiences that feels very connected to the present moment.
She recently released her US tour dates, so get your tickets!

Also, you can subscribe to Thirty Days of Yes here.

And finally, lady loves, I will leave you with these photo of some stunning graffiti art Cara Delevingne discovered of herself and shared with us on Instagram.

You’re welcome.

See you next time, lez girls!
