Morning Brew – Michael Sam talks saving a young lesbian from suicide in ESPYS award speech

Good morning! Here’s this week’s #TBT: Linda Perry, the original Whitney Mixter.

Last night Michael Sam was given the Arthur Ashe Award for courage at the ESPYS. As the out St. Louis Rams player left his seat, he kissed his partner and hugged Robin Roberts, and on stage, he tearfully relayed a story of helping a young lesbian to want to stay alive after she thought killing herself was an option.

I love him! And can I also just say Robin has seriously stepped up her fashion game since coming out and I am living for it?

Sia and Angel Haze are both nominated for MTV Video Music Awards this year. Sia’s “Chandelier” is up for Video of the Year while Angel’s “Battle Cry” (which Sia, incidentally, sings on) will vie Best Video With a Social Message. Speaking of Sia, her album hit number one and she was pretty psyched about it.

Lindsey Shaw spoke with Starry Mag about Paily and Pretty Little Liars.

I want to see Paily work. There is so much invested in Paily and to kind of watch it deteriorate because of the same issues that I thought we had overcome is hard. But that’s how things are in Rosewood. Things reoccur and things come back around to bite you. I was sad, but I was also intrigued because a breakup really only means maybe they are discovering new sides of each other and new sides to themselves. Ultimately, I want each of them to be okay on their own. I don’t see Paige emerging a little darker though this season. I think she is finally really figuring out that she wants to stand by her own brand of light. There is nothing she is trying to do maliciously. In fact, she is trying to really take the high road where this big gash, this wound in her life is. She wants her girlfriend to come along with her, but she is choosing herself. Paige is choosing herself and I think that is incredibly strong and beautiful.

TVLine has some Calzona scoop from Season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy. Shonda Rhimes said of Callie and Arizona’s attempts to find a surrogate:

“It’s going to be revealed very quickly for them that is a Band-Aid. How could it not be? I don’t know if anybody could watch that and go, ‘Yeah, that’s the answer for them’? But I love the idea that it’s going to open up the opportunity for them to finally explore everything that wrong and whether or not they should be together at all. Their entree relationship has been a series of Band-Aids.”
