Watch Now! “The New Black” clips explores gays in the church

In this clip from the documentary The New Black, filmmaker Yoruba Richen interviews figures of the community who explain the importance of churches in black history. The film explores the fight for equality within black families and of faith, and as you’ll see in the clip, church has always been a safe and necessary space for many African Americans when their lives outside of it were anything but.

This next clip focuses on black voters during Maryland’s Question 6 and how some were staunchly against calling gay marriage a “civil rights issue.”

The New Black is premiering tonight at the Los Angeles Film Festival and will screen in New York next week.
