Morning Brew – Wed. April 17: “Pitch Perfect” is getting a sequel, Ellen is still hugely successful

Good morning!

The Vanity Fair Tribeca Party brought out some of our favorite women last night in New York.

Across town, Cynthia Nixon attended a production of The Nance, starring her friend Nathan Lane.

I’m pretty sure Rihanna has officially replaced Angelina Jolie as the Top Lesbian Crush for all straight women. The latest to want to kiss RiRi are Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. Meanwhile, their bandmate Perrie Edwards prefers Katy Perry.

BrainPickings has Willa Cather’s only published letter to her female lover, Edith Lewis. How different communication was back then — and so was fashion. Willa writes, “I have worn my white silk suit almost constantly with no white hat, which is very awkward.” Ugh, I hate that!

A Pitch Perfect sequel is in the works for 2015. Will the entire cast be back, including Ester Dean as the group lez? We can only hope.

Ellen DeGeneres was the subject of a recent Los Angeles Times profile and she talked about why some networks were wary about putting her talk show on air:

I don’t know what they thought. That I would stand in front of a rainbow flag and play a heavy rotation of Melissa Etheridge, Indio Girls and k.d. lang?

Probably, but they aren’t really that danceable. But the story is about how successful Ellen is, how people of all ages love her and basically DGAF that she’s gay. Ellen’s just happy she can make other people happy.

Culture changes all the time, so I try not to analyze it too much. My hope for the show is that it has nothing to do with anything other than making people feel good, that it would be a safe place where no one gets hurt.

New York’s DJ Jazzy Joyce has come out as a lesbian in a really strange interview with a site called MommysLittleSecret.com.
