Lily Allen gets off the tour bus

On Monday, Lily Allen, that brilliantly cheeky songstress from LDN town, announced on her MySpace blog that she had canceled most of her May and June tour dates in America. In typical Lily fashion, she did so with humor and honesty, something almost unheard of in the micromanaged media lives of many American pop tarts.

“I am tired, but more than that I don’t think I have been giving my best performances recently. I have been getting really drunk because I’ve been so nervous about doing bad shows, and I don’t want people spending money on a going to see a show that isnt the best it could be. I am not falling apart at the seems, I am not suffering with exhaustion, I am not pregnant, and I am not going to rehab.”

See what I said about being honest and cheeky? Now, on the one hand, this news is terribly disappointing, for purely selfish reasons. I fell in love with Lily at first listen. And I would love to see her sassy and spunk (not to mention all that taffeta) in person. Alas, now this won’t be happening anytime soon.

But on the other hand, I think this is a very brave, very mature move. Say what you will about fulfilling commitments and acting professional, but an artist who isn’t giving her best really isn’t worth the price of admission. It takes character to turn down the money and possibly kill the momentum of her fledgling career by taking a step back. It also takes character to realize that perhaps the pressure of all the hype and hysteria has been getting to her and that her form of coping perhaps isn’t the healthiest.

The last thing I want is for Lily to flame out just as she begins to fire up. May this break be the rest she needs to keep knocking ’em out for years to come.
