Chicks Getting Hitched: Fall in love

Last week I turned off my air conditioning for the first time in two solid months. A reprieve from the summer heat has me looking forward to fall. September and October are actually two of the tops months for weddings, and it’s easy to see why. In many areas, the weather is beautiful — not too hot and not yet cold. Plus, fall foliage provides a beautiful natural backdrop for wedding ceremonies. Here are some of what I think are the best ways to incorporate the season into your autumn nuptials.

Seasonal menus

Autumn is one season that definitely has its own distinct flavors. Weave fall foods into your wedding day menu by serving pumpkin ravioli drizzled with brown butter and garnished with a bit of sage or cozy butternut squash soup served in hollowed-out miniature pumpkins or cute little crocks.

Nature’s altar

Getting married under a tree is always picturesque and romantic, and particularly during autumn. Vibrant orange, yellow and red fall foliage is so spectacular, you’ll hardly need any other decorations for an outdoor ceremony. Plus, fall colors contrast beautifully with ivory wedding attire. For indoor autumn weddings, incorporate nature by sprinkling your aisle runner with leaves instead of rose petals.

Warm your guests’ hands and hearts

There can be a chill in the air on autumn afternoons and evenings. Give guests a warm welcome to your wedding by having waiters greet them with a cup of hot apple cider. Spike it with rum to get the party started.

Sweater weather

Nothing says autumn like a warm, cozy sweater. Fall brides don’t have to be left out in the cold or sacrifice style. Obviously a big, bulky sweater won’t work with a wedding dress, but a beaded cardigan in ivory, delicate camel-colored cashmere or a pretty pale blue knit wrap would be perfect accessories for autumn brides. Wedding shop BHLDN has a whole line of cover-ups for brides. I love this merino wool cardigan with bejeweled buttons.

Taffy apple dessert bar

Nothing says autumn like taffy apples. Instead of wedding cake or a traditional dessert bar, surprise guests with a make-your-own taffy apple station. Provide a variety of different apples and elevate this fun dessert with upscale toppings like dark chocolate sauce and sea salt.

Which elements of autumn would you love to see at a wedding this fall?
