Report Shows No Progress In Hollywood On-Screen Diversity

Hollywood still has a diversity problem, with women, lesbians, and especially lesbians of color being completely left out of the picture.

A report from the University of Southern California found that men had more than twice as many roles in 2017 films than women. It also found that women of color were largely excluded from leading roles. Obviously, with so few female roles, there were almost no lesbian roles and even scarcer racially diverse lesbian roles. In fact, when Hollywood does mention diversity efforts, lesbians are never mentioned. Black lesbians don’t seem to be on their radar at all.

The report analyzed the top 100 films of every year since 2007. In 2017, only 31.8 percent of characters with dialogue were women; 70.7 percent of all the roles of 2017 were cast with white actors. Only four women of color were cast as leads. 2017 was a particularly terrible year for lesbian visibility in movies.

The report also notes an even more alarming trend: 13-20 yr old females are just as likely as 21-39 yr old females to be shown in sexy attire with some nudity, and referenced as attractive. This is appalling and disgusting, Hollywood. But of course, out of 1,100 films, only 43 women worked as directors. So I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.
