Cristy C. Road’s Next World Tarot Card Deck is Queer Magic

Out Cuban-American writer and artist Cristy C. Road is creating a new tarot card deck that queer women will want for all of their readings. Cristy’s Next World Tarot Deck features LGBT women on its cards, and Cristy said that as a queer woman herself, her energy “definitely defines a lot of the cards.” There’s also a large focus on women of color, and the logo is created from cards that feature queer femmes of color.

Cristy, who has published three illustrated novels including 2008’s Bad Habits and 2o13’s Spit and Passion, has toured with Sister Spit and is a celebrated part of the queer DIY community. Now she’s raising the money to help fund the first run of Next World Tarot.

“While the Tarot is consistent, it’s always relative to the reader/viewer,” Cristy writes about the campaign. “We want to find ourselves in our decks, and we want them to tell our story. My stories are about smashing systematic oppression, owning our truths, being accountable to the people and places that support us, and taking back a connection to your body that may have been lost through trauma or societal brainwashing.”

Cristy shared some exclusive cards with us at AfterEllen that show off her brilliant illustrations and representations of queers in the magical world of divination. You can see more examples of her work and read the story of how the deck came to be on her Kickstarter page.
