Morning Brew – Friday, Feb. 17: Malin Akerman to play Portia’s sister, Kristen Bell on her missing lesbian scene in “Deadwood”

It’s Friday! I hope you are as happy about that as I am.

If you don’t want to wait to watch Cherry Jones in NBC’s new drama Awake, the pilot is available for watching online. How about that?

Mia Jones shared this amazing video of Austra covering Robyn. I’m pretty sure Austra is my spirit animal.

Newly out actress Magda Szubankski has joined Twitter and is using it to thank fans for their outpouring of support. How cute is she in her icon photo?

While Reese Witherspoon told Conan she’s crushing on Rachel Bilson and Jennifer Aniston, I think she’s got a thing for Kate Middleton after watching her gush about meeting her on Ellen.

Great news for us in the states: SyFy has picked up Season 2 of Lost Girl and will begin airing it immediately after Season 1 ends. It’s like Christmas!

I cannot be more excited about The Smart One. Malin Akerman has been cast as Portia de Rossi‘s sister (aka the dumb one). Jean Smart has also joined the show. How incredible is this going to be? Malin is currently starring in Wanderlust alongside Jennifer Aniston. They seem to be pretty close.

Remember when you didn’t come out when you were younger and it meant you could have blissful sleepovers with your bestie? Bitch magazine wonders if that’s changing now that kids are coming out at younger ages.

How do this year’s Oscar nominees fare when put through the Bechdel Test? Feminist Frequency checked them out. (I totally agree with her about Gertrude Stein in Midnight in Paris. She could have been used so much more! A waste of Kathy Bates.)

Kristen Bell told The Advocate she’s not marrying beau Dax Shepard until her gay friends can. She also talked about her lesbian role in Deadwood, which I have not seen and now need to.

I played a role with lesbian interaction when I played Flora on two episodes of Deadwood. I saw her as an opportunist, and her sexuality fell under that umbrella. I tried to play her as a sociopath, and what she wanted in any given moment far outweighed anything else. There’s a scene where Flora seduces Joanie, who was a lesbian, but Flora was taking advantage of her, and it was meant to show Flora’s psychosis. There was actually a lot more of that scene that I shot with Kim Dickens, who played Joanie; they didn’t show it because it didn’t work for the scene, but we laid down on the bed and really went at it.

Just a reminder that today is the last day you can vote in our favorite TV characters poll. Will one of Kristen’s roles be on it? Veronica Mars, perhaps?

Today in Lesbianish TV: The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Kids Are All Right (Cinemax 1 p.m.), Set It Off (HBO2 1:45 p.m.), The Talk (CBS 2 p.m.), Fried Green Tomatoes (MMAX 3 p.m.), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (OMAX 5:30 p.m.), The Rachel Maddow Show (MSNBC 9 p.m.), Degrassi marathon (TeenNick 9 p.m.), Portlandia (IFC 10 p.m.) (Thanks Roni!)
