Morning Brew – Friday, Sept. 16: Rosemarie Dewitt plays gay in “Your Sister’s Sister,” Ellen and Jane play “Lot Cops”

It’s Friday, guys! I hope you are ready for the weekend. (I am!) Today is my wife’s birthday. Happy birthday baby!

Who am I kidding? She doesn’t read the Morning Brew. She once tried to tell me the big news that Batwoman was gay. I’m like “Duh — since about two years ago!” Also, she has to constantly ask me who Leisha Hailey is. I’m not kidding. I love her anyway.

A site called Religion Dispatches ran a super cool interview with the author of a book called Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy, which came out in 1986. The writer discussed how revolutionary the book was, and asked author Judith C. Brown how she’s seen it be a resource still today.

More recently, as social activists began to work towards changing legislation about sexual orientation, sexual behavior, and marriage laws they have turned to the writing of historians to counter uninformed arguments that “this is the way sexual behavior has always been viewed” or “this has always been the definition of marriage.” It’s fabulous that historians in recent years have testified as expert witnesses in several of the major gay rights cases-George Chauncey testified in Lawrence v. Texas (2003), which was critical to abolishing the sodomy laws, and he and Nancy Cott testified in California’s Proposition 8 case about same-sex marriage (2010), which is making its way to the Supreme Court.

Apparently there is a new unauthorized biography about Joan Jett out called Bad Reputation. I need to own this.

Speaking of Joan, Miley Cyrus interviewed the rocker for the new issue of V magazine, which is the Heroes issue. I need to get the whole issue, but People had this excerpt from Joan telling Miley:

I was thinking to myself … how difficult it must be to lead your life as a teenager with the paparazzi and the amount of press you’re surrounded by. I thought to myself, “Wow that was kind of a blessing that we didn’t have that stuff when I was growing up in The Runaways.”

Exactly — because now you can make a movie about it all and get tons of cash money, Joan!

I feel like I should tell you to brace yourself, so do so. In the new film Your Sister’s Sister, Rosemarie Dewitt plays a lesbian — who sleeps with a dude. She talked with New York Magazine about how she handled the scene.

While working on this I was going back and forth to Tara, and I asked a good friend who was a lesbian, “Would you ever do that, get out of a long-term relationship with a woman and sleep with a guy? Just for a one-night stand?” She said, “No, because inevitably the next morning you wake up with a dick in your back.” I knew Hannah would regret it.

The director, Lynn Shelton, is queer and the movie has great reviews, so I’m hoping it’s still worth seeing. But I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that the idea of a lesbian sleeping with a guy is going to get really old for Hollywood.

Evan Rachel Wood has a boyfriend. And my heart breaks.

And so does Heather Morris. And your heart breaks! But here’s what else: She doesn’t want to kiss a lot of people on Glee because he gets jealous.

My boyfriend doesn’t like to see me kiss anyone on the show. My mom either, but when I became Artie’s girlfriend, she was relieved. She said, “I’m happy you’re no longer the slut!” because the running joke on the show is that Brittany has kissed or slept with everyone in school.

I remember her telling me that her mom didn’t like Brittany’s bisexual side. Maybe her mom and her boyfriend need to let Heather be her creative self!

Some dude named Bobby Brackins released a single called “Lesbian.” So it’s basically about threesomes, as is usually the case in songs praising the gay chick in hip-hop. And thanks for not caring I’m a lesbian. I care!
