Morning Brew – Monday, August 15: Rose McGowan hasn’t kissed a girl, Amber Heard was never in the closet

Morning all! It’s great to be back here with you.

Rooney Mara talks with Entertainment Weekly about The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in this week’s issue. An online tidbit has her talking about that controversial poster, where she’s topless. Rooney said:

I was supportive of it. I understand why there was a lot of controversy. People have a hard time with strong females and with nudity. But I think had I been doing something incredibly violent on the poster, people wouldn’t have had a problem with it. That sort of says a lot about the world that we live in. It’s just a teaser poster. I think it did just that. It teased people.

I want to hear what else she has to say about the movie, which doesn’t come out until Christmas. But I’m OK with buying that issue, because EW also posted this first picture from Rum Diary, with Amber Heard and Johnny Depp

Depp always gets the hottest leading ladies! Heard, meanwhile, has been talking to Playboy about her part in the The Playboy Club, and also spoke about being an out actress.

First of all, to say I came out implies that I was once in. Let me be straight about that-no pun intended [laughs]-I never came out from anywhere. I’ve always lived my life the way I’ve wanted and have been honest with myself and everyone around me. It didn’t really affect anything in my career. I don’t think the producers and directors I’ve worked with care one way or another. The only frustrating part has been all the media attention. For someone like me who prefers to keep her life as private as possible, it has been disconcerting to have to define so much about myself. I don’t want to be labeled as one thing or another. In the past I’ve had successful relationships with men, and now I’m in this successful relationship with a woman. When it comes to love I am totally open. And I don’t want to be put into a category, as in “I’m this” or “I’m that.”

The rest of the Q&A is great, too. I learned a lot – like her dog is named Pistol.

Crime fiction novelist Val McDermid is about to publish her 25th book and The Guardian penned a nice piece about her. She spoke to them about feeling alienated as a teen, which she said probably had to do with her sexuality.

…I didn’t realise that at the time. I thought it was because I wanted to be a writer, and writers were supposed to be a bit weird. The social politics at home were radical, but the gender politics were firmly fixed in the 1800s. Of course we had heard of the phenomenon of lesbians, but it was always somebody’s cousin who had actually seen one. I read The Well of Loneliness and thought that I’m obviously not a lesbian because I didn’t want to wear a man’s suit or be called Stephen. But at Oxford I read Kate Millett’s Sexual Politics and it completely blew me away. Then I got my heart broken, discovered other lesbians — and that was my life from then on.

Oprah would call that your “A-ha moment,” Val!

In an interview with The Boston Globe, comedian Tig Notaro said she’s developing something with the dudes behind The Hangover 2. A lesbian bachelorette party gone wrong? I’d be first in line to see that movie.

I’m a sucker for all-girls boarding school movies, and Tanner Hall doesn’t seem to be any exception. In fact, the two girls in the bathtub look like they’re about to go all Room in Rome on us, so I don’t think we’ll be disappointed.

Rooney Mara, way to be in every movie I want to see.

I will forever love Rose McGowan for her roles in Scream, Jawbreaker and Grindhouse, and it’s good to know she loves me, too. She loves lesbians, knows a lot of them, too. But even the woman who has dated Marilyn Manson hasn’t kissed a girl – well, one of them anyway.

No. I disappoint myself. I’ve never even kissed a girl. Isn’t that funny? The girls I think are cute look like guys, but then I think, But if they open their shirt, they’ll have breasts. You know that guy Brad [Goreski], who was Rachel Zoe’s assistant? I’d be attracted to a girl version of him.

Read the rest of her chat with The Advocate and then go watch Jawbreaker again. (It also stars Judy Greer and Julie Benz!)
