Afternoon Delight: Karen O writes an opera, Katy Perry smurfs a girl

Out frontwoman Abisha Uhl and the all female band Sick of Sarah are traveling the US with the Vans 2011 Warped Tour. Their next stop is the Blossom Music Center in Cleveland, OH. Tomorrow night (Wednesday, July 20) that band takes the stage at 8 p.m. so if you’re in the area don’t miss them! P.S. Abisha, put a shirt on!

Vulture reports that Katy Perry, while voicing Smurfette in the Smurfs movie, will confess, “I smurfed a girl … and I liked it.” I’m guessing that many lesbian/bi viewers will advise Perry, once again, to smurf off.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Live Free or Die Hard) heads to Antarctica to take on The Thing. Winstead plays a graduate student whose research site discovers an alien aircraft. Uh oh, I have a bad feeling about this.

Next year Rosario Dawson will star in Gimme Shelter about “a pregnant teenager turned away by her Wall Street father because of her decision to have her baby. Forced into the streets, she embarks on a desperate journey of survival.” The teenager is played by none other than Disney’s Vanessa Hudgens. I’ve never been a Hudgens fan until I saw her new hairdo for her edgy role. Is it wrong that I’m attracted to a homeless haircut?

If you’re a gay lady who loves dance check out the DVD Leading Ladies! Wolfe Video is offering a $5 discount on the film for pre-orders through September 13.

People is reporting that comic genius Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, SNL) has given birth to a son. She and her husband, Paul Thomas Anderson, welcomed Jack (their third child) to the family on July 3.

Karen O, frontwoman for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, has written an opera! The show, described in a press release as a “psycho-opera” and “an assault on the tragic joys of youth,”will premiere in Brooklyn and run from October 13-16 in different New York venues.
