Morning Brew – Tuesday, June 28: Queen Latifah plays a LUG in “Single Ladies,” new video from JenRo

Morning!

I am going to be out the rest of this week as my wife and I are moving to Portland, Oregon. It’s going to be one long road trip, but Heather Hogan will be taking over Brew in the meantime. Wish me luck!

JenRo’s new video for “Closet” is a little bit of a tearjerker. It features a mini-JenRo, dealing with being different and a mom who just doesn’t understand.

And while we’re sharing hip-hop videos, here’s the newest from Rainbow Noise, “Ridin Swervin.”

I am about to be “Ridin Swervin” on my road trip. I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing.

Brooke Vincent says she and Sacha Parkinson have both fallen for Jessie J. Brooke told Now magazine:

When we saw her play live, we both decided we wanted her. Jessie’s got attitude and I like that.

I feel like Brooke could easily pull off Jessie J’s look, with a lot of make-up and a blunt bob and some bangs.

Some lesbians don’t celebrate Pride. Are you one of them? This writer at Salon explains why she doesn’t take part. An excerpt:

I didn’t “become” a lesbian; it’s not some goal that I achieved. I’ve known I was attracted to other women since the moment I hit puberty. The only difference, compared to the experience of my heterosexual peers, was that I found myself as the one girl who liked other girls when every girl I knew liked boys. This made me question my feelings and led to years of confusion because, like every adolescent, I wanted to be like everyone else. But I never did anything to become a lesbian. I just always was.

So why do my fellow gays gather each June to parade through the streets singing YMCA on floats filled with women dressed in chaps and men dressed as Cher to celebrate something they couldn’t help being in the first place?

I understand her point, but Pride also had to do with the fact that we, as a community, achieved a common goal with Stonewall, which spawned the first ever Pride Parade in New York City. There are definitely some over-commercialization/party aspects to Prides now that weren’t part of the original intention, but it’s a celebration of us — even if you didn’t “become” a lesbian and just are one.

Heather Morris participated in Global Smurf Day in an attempt to break a world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Smurfs in one location, ever. It took place in London on June 26, and they did it!

Fast Company included Anyone But Me in their piece about the success of the web series. I love that the only pictures included are of Aster and Vivian. Way to lesbify that article!

In this sneak peek of an upcoming episode of Single Ladies, Queen Latifah plays a TV host who says she once had some lady lovin’ in college.

I love that Latifah is embracing the gay rumors and playing a LUG — Lesbian Until Graduation. Check out the episode on July 4 on VH1.
