Morning Brew – Monday, June 6: Gabrielle Christian releases “Kissing Mandy,” Ellen Page’s “Freeheld” can’t find funding

Morning! Did you watch The Real L Word last night?

OK, I am warning you this might be an unpopular opinion, but I own it. Gabrielle Christian has recorded a single called “Kissing Mandy” – her ode to Mandy Musgrave. Gaby, who is straight, is selling a song to lesbian fans, essentially, because she knows you’ll buy it. Now I loved South of Nowhere, and I will adore Spashley until the end of time, but Gaby is really milking her gay fanbase for all its worth. Plus, the song sucks. There, I said it.

But if you don’t mind when straight ladies pander to you for your dollar, then “Kissing Mandy” can be yours for $.99.

For some inexplicable reason, no one is willing to fund a movie directed by Catherine Hardwicke starring Ellen Page as a lesbian mechanic with a dying partner. The feature adaptation of Freeheld is being, well, held up by the lack of funding. Catherine tells The NY Post:

I wish I could get financing for that movie. I love that project, Ellen is awesome and we have a beautiful script. But as always the challenge for an indie film is getting someone to pay for this unique, different and daring vision. I don’t think it’s going to be my next movie. Or at least it doesn’t look likely.

Now there’s a film worth contributing to Kickstarter for. They’d probably only need, oh, $10 million. But isn’t Ellen worth it?

The cast of Party Down will reunite on an episode of Children’s Hospital this season. So far everyone is confirmed except Jane Lynch. I’ll hold out hope, but I know she’s busy.

Star Magazine has a story about Kate Middleton having kissed one of her boarding schoolmates when she was 14. Kate’s pal Jessica Hay tells the mag:

Before one of the school dances, Catherine and I were a little tipsy, and she admitted she’d never kissed a boy in her whole life. I said, “Oh, kissing is easy!” and I pecked her on the lips. Our eyes locked and we started full-on kissing, with each of us pretending the other was a boy!

How did they find this out? I wonder if they called every schoolmate of Kate’s until they could find out something scandalous. Of course one of those questions had to be, “Has Kate ever done anything lesbianish? Because that sells.”

Ariel Schrag has contributed to The Comic Book Guide to the Mission. Her addition is called SF Dyke March, and is hilarious, per usual. Just in time for Pride!

Rihanna gave a very sexy lapdance to a female fan at a recent show in Baltimore. Lucky, lucky fan.

VH1 has a list of five celebs who have played the lesbian card to gain popularity. It’s the usual suspects, though I will never say Lady Gaga uses her bisexuality to pander to us. If she does a cover of “Kissing Mandy,” though, I will wonder.
