Morning Brew – Wednesday, April 27: Lesbians in Thailand are all the rage, Rosie cancels her stay at Trump Hotel

Good morning!

Did you guys watch The Voice last night? I did and I loved it! Unfortunately Bridget claimed writing about the lesbians for Afternoon Delight today so I can’t say any more, but I just wanted to share my new obsession with you all and let you know we know about it!

Out Thai director Saratsawadee Wongsomphet (Yes or No), lesbian magazine editor Khemanut Ronarut and drummer Sarunkorn Choksiripureenont were interviewed for a piece on Thailand’s new “lesbian chicness.” Sarunkorn tells The Associated Press:

It’s becoming fashionable now. You see lesbians everywhere.

Sounds like my next trip is to Thailand! Read the whole thing. It’s pretty inspiring.

On NPR’s Talk of the Nation yesterday, there was a story on marriage equality and how it is like the civil rights movement. It also focuses on a documentary short called Marriage Equality, which sounds pretty interesting.

Last week I penned a piece for The Huffington Post about Rosie O’Donnell’s decision to stay at the Trump Hotel while in Chicago for her new show on OWN. I was upset that the Oprah-owned network and Rosie herself would contribute money to the establishment owned by a man who is thinking of running for president in 2012 and has a decidedly anti-gay platform. Since then, Rosie has changed her mind. She even asked me for some other hotel suggestions! Thanks to Rosie for listening and showing the Donald he isn’t the only option. Love, the lesbians.

Check out this trailer for Waited For. It’s a documentary about South African lesbians who adopt children from all over the world.

You can see it when it hits the festival circuit this summer.

Do you like to read a lot of sex scenes in novels? The Independent‘s Terence Blacker thinks the world needs more — even lesbian sex as written by a man. (Seriously.)

This Ms. interview with JD Samson is pretty rad. I suggest you read it. Here’s what she had to say about the MEN song “Credit Card Babies”:

The song takes this kind of depressing topic and turns it around and makes it a way for queers to come together. … It’s definitely the song that people like to freak-out about the most when we play shows, which is really cool, and it is definitely the song that … made people interested in us, especially queer people. I wanted to write the song because I’m 32 and I’m definitely hitting a place where I’m interested in starting a family, but the complications push me back. The first verse is, like, “I just want to have a baby,” and the second one is “Wait a second, let me think about this, should I have a baby”? I think that’s a realistic conversation most of my friends are having right now.

Will this be on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy? If so, another musical episode, please!

Season Two of the web series A Rose By Any Other Name will premiere mid-May. If you haven’t caught any of the bisexual-themed show, you can watch all 11 episodes at their website.

Today in Lesbianish TV: The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Talk (CBS 2 p.m.), Police Women of Memphis (OWN 3 p.m.), But I’m a Cheerleader (Logo 8 p.m.) and The Rachel Maddow Show (MSNBC 9 p.m., midnight, 4 a.m.) (Thanks Roni!)
