Morning Brew – Monday, March 28: Danneel Ackles cast as lesbian in “I Hate That I Love You,” Catherine Deneuve on “Black Swan”

It’s Lady Gaga’s birthday, and there’s no better way to celebrate than to announce she is the recipient of this year’s Always Next, Forever Now award, which she’ll be presented with next month at Logo’s New Now Next Awards. The birthday girl is 25 today.

BlogHer is celebrating another out woman who was also hugely influential in LGBT rights (although in an entirely different way): Barbara Gittings.

Anna Camp has finally got her girlfriend on I Hate That I Love You. The NBC pilot about a pair of straight friends that hook up their lesbian BFFs has finalized their gay girl duo by casting Danneel Ackles, who you might know better as Danneel Harris. (She took the last name of her beau, Jensen Ackles.)

Danneel has played a lesbian most recently in The Roommate, and also played a gayish cheerleader in Fired Up. Is she seeking out these roles or is there something about her that Hollywood just sees reading “lesbian”?

Director Shamim Sarif talked with Gaelick.com about her struggle to finance follow-up films to I Can’t Think Straight and The World Unseen because their North American distributor went bankrupt. She told the site:

It’s been a sobering time for us, and very sad that a distributor who specialised in gay and lesbian and art house films has left many independent filmmakers in trouble.

But Shamim is still hard at work on her third film, Despite the Falling Snow, and says it will go into production soon.

The New York Times had a nice profile of out hotelier Liz Lambert this week, describing her ultra-mod Texas hotels. There’s also a quote about her from friend Nina Garduno, owner of Free City/Leisha Hailey’s partner. Nina says of her friend branching out into other cities:

I would love to see her interpretation of L.A. grit.

You can take the girl from Texas, but you can’t take the Texas out of the girl!

Shonda Rhimes was recently asked about how she likes to surprise the Grey’s Anatomy audience. Her response:

We’re really pushing to find new medical stories, to look at our characters in different ways. I think Sara [Ramirez]’s character [Callie Torres] is a perfect example of this. She was straight with George, and then she was sleeping with Mark, and then she was a lesbian, sort of, and then she was sort of not sure she was a lesbian. She’s bisexual, and the last time we saw her, she’s pregnant with her best friend’s baby to her lesbian lover.

If someone didn’t watch the show, they’d probably think that sounds kind of nutty. Well, maybe it does even if you do watch the show.

Backstage reminded legendary actress Catherine Deneuve that she had a hot lesbian sex scene with Susan Sarandon in The Hunger, years before Black Swan created hype over one much tamer.

Yes, it’s not so new! Everything’s been done before. It’s just the way you film it. And I think they were quite influenced by Repulsion which I did with Polanski.

There’s probably not much you can do that Catherine hasn’t.
