Morning Brew – Monday, Feb. 7: A lesbian moment on “Outsourced,” Sara Quin debates books on the CBC

Good morning! So glad to be back with you.

I had an amazing time at the Creating Change Conference in Minneapolis this weekend. It was so great to meet so many fans of what we do on AfterEllen.com, so I’d like to shout out to Seth, Lucas, Mollie, @MNovoB and everyone else who came up to say hello. It’s always so good to meet readers face-to-face and hear what kind of things you enjoy reading on the site.

Were you watching the Super Bowl last night? Ellen and Portia were.

On the most recent episode of Outsourced, Tonya (Pippa Black) tried to help out her single male pal Charlie (Diedrich Bader) by attempting to set him up with a woman she met named Veena. Unfortunately for Charlie, Veena quickly told him he “wasn’t her type.” Here’s the exchange:

Veena: I’m not interested in Charlie. I’m interested in you.

Tonya: Oh.

Charlie: Ohhh.

Veena: I have been for a long time, I’ve just been trying to figure out how to ask you out.

Tonya: Sorry Veena, I’m actually seeing someone.

Charlie: Oh, wait, you didn’t even give her a chance. She may seem gruff on the outside –

Tonya: Charlie, not gonna happen.

Charlie: Come on, it’s like wrestling, with two winners.

Veena: Well, if you change your mind…

Here’s the whole episode. You can watch the scene between Tanya and Veena at about 17 minutes in. (Thanks so much for the tip, Maddi!)

BTW, Tanya, Veena is hot. I would have gone for it.

Australian radio personality Mieke Buchan was captured kissing Martina Navratilova by the paparazzi. The next day, Confidential asked her about it, and she laughed it off, saying they were just friends, having dinner together. “If I was to have a glamorous lesbian affair, Martina would be a stellar choice,” she told the magazine, “but that’s just not the case.” Nice try, paps!

Ilene Chaiken has signed on as executive producer and showrunner for the new CBS pilot Hail Mary. All we know about the show so far is what Deadline.com reports:

The project, created by Jeff Wadlow, is a buddy P.I. show set in Atlanta that focuses on a suburban single mom who teams up with a streetwise hustler to solve crimes.

We’re trying to get all the info we can on possible lesbianish characters and storylines. Duh.

This is probably the third or fourth time that I’ve happened across something that proclaims Tulisa of the UK pop group N-Dubz is not gay. I’m not sure who is starting or keeping up this rumor, but it caused Tulisa to say, yet again, “‘I don’t care if people think I’m gay. I’m not but I don’t really mind if people think I am.”

The Roommate opened big this weekend at the box office, coming out on top. Is it because Leighton Meester kisses another woman in the trailer? Couldn’t hurt. She told a reporter about that scene:

I’ve had to kiss girls before but with this character she’s not doing it to be intimate she’s doing it to gain control so it’s not really like that. It was tricky to shoot of course, those scenes are always awkward but it’s really no big deal.

I’m curious as to what was tricky about this situation. Maybe it’s one of those things where I have to see the movie first to understand.

Chely Wright‘s Like Me Organization is helping to open an LGBT youth center in Kansas City. It will be called The Lighthouse Project and “will provide support, resources and education to the LGBT community in the midwest” and will also hand out scholarships.

k.d. lang has been nominated for a Juno Award for Best Single. The song? Her version of “Hallelujah” as performed as the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games ceremony. If k.d. wins, it’d be number nine for her.

Speaking of Canadians, Sara Quin is competing in CBC’s Canada Reads. It’s a debate, of sorts, in which celebs like Sara make a case for their favorite Canadian novel. Watch or listen to it streaming online, and hear Sara pimp out Jeff Lemire‘s Essex County.

Today in lesbianish TV: The Ellen DeGeneres Show (check local listings), Rachel Maddow on The Martha Stewart Show (Hallmark 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), The Talk (CBS 2 p.m.), Ghost Whisperer (We 5 p.m.), Pretty Little Liars (7 p.m. ABC Family), The Rachel Maddow Show (MSNBC 9 p.m. and midnight), Being Human (Syfy 9 p.m.), Tabatha’s Salon Takeover (Bravo 10 p.m.), Susan Powter on RuPaul’s Drag Race (Logo 10 p.m.), Skins (MTV 10 p.m.) and Rizzoli & Isles (TNT 11 p.m.) (Thanks Roni!)
