Morning Brew: Thursday, November 11: Portia won’t rule out “DWTS,” lesbian poker player Vanessa Selbst wins big in France

Morning!

Over the weekend, out poker player Vanessa Selbst won the Partouche Poker Tour’s Main Event in Cannes. As the only openly lesbian professional poker player, Vanessa is holding it down for the gay women at a table full of straight men.

Congrats Vanessa! And thanks to Miranda for the tip.

If you saw Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement, you know how special Edith Windsor and Thea Spyer’s relationship was. They were together for 44 years before being able to marry in Toronto in 2007. Sadly, Thea passed away last year, and now Edie is filing a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act. She is seeking the $350,000 she paid in estate taxes after the government failed to recognize their marriage.

You can check out the DVD for yourself when it’s released Nov. 30.

Building Design is not interested in how Lip Service portrays lesbians, but, rather, architects. So how does the BBC show do?

I can’t make up my mind whether architects should be pleased or worried that they’re been depicted as inefficient, sexist and too drunk to attend client meetings. More importantly though is whether Jay, Cat or Alistair bear any resemblance to reality. Something tells me perhaps they do.

Great, so homophobic bosses and dudes that cheat on their girlfriends with interns really exist?

A former city council member in the UK, Inga Jorgensen, has complained ex-Lord Mayor John Fareham said she had “lesbian hair.” Then she promptly filed her stylist for giving her the Tegan and Sara when she specifically asked for the Justin Bieber. (Just kidding.)

We’re hearing more from the Dancing With the Stars camp on the idea of having two women partner up in the near future. Ryan Seacrest had Portia DeGeneres on his radio show yesterday and broke the news to her: She’s a wanted woman on the dance floor.

“They’re planning to feature a same-sex couple. You’re at the top of the list,” Ryan told her.

“Goodness, you really do break news,” Porita said. “I’m not gonna pass, let me think about it. “I used to be a ballet dancer, it’s not completely a pass. You never know.”

And judge Carrie Ann Inaba told People she is all for the female pairing.

I would love it. I fully support that and I think America is ready for that. Our country is much more accepting of same sex couples and it would be great for the show to reflect that. I don’t cast the show, but I think it would be great and I’d show up in my rainbow colors and fully support it.

Dancing With the Stars, you just won’t quit until I watch you, will you?

Performance artist Heather Cassils is seeking help to fund her new projects. Yes, she’s the one that kissed Lady Gaga in the “Telephone” video.

So many lesbian rumors are coming out of South Africa lately. The latest: singer Zarie Hassan, who is reportedly romancing this woman, Shoaledo. I’ll give it a few days before they start denying it and proclaiming their love for men.

Lesbians don’t abuse their children, according to a study done at UCLA. They don’t specify what kind of ethnicities or class brackets they looked into, or how extensive this research was, but it’s surely a nice thing to hear.
