Morning Brew – Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi celebrate six years of marriage

Good morning!

Congrats to Ellen and Portia on their sixth wedding anniversary. Every year they have it written in the sky.

Although the tabloids are currently running all kinds of rumors about a divorce, the two seem to be happy and in love. (The latest? Jen Aniston is Portia’s go-to friend for advice.)

Queen Latifah and her girlfriend shared a kiss during their Italian vacation together over the weekend.

The Guardian asks “Can lesbians really be a straight girl’s best friend?” It would probably be “a lesbian” and not a group of them as a collective BFF but, yes. Duh.

Pakistani lesbian couple Azra Ahmed and Lubna Jamal share their story with BBC News. Brave, brave women!

The Daily Star has a piece from a straight woman advocating for lesbianism: “Why are we scared of lesbianism? Casey Batchelor tackles same-sex love.” I can’t.

The fierce Emily Fowler, co-founder and vice president at HeroX, gives some real talk about women in tech:

“The stereotypes were your traditional comments like ‘nerd,’ ‘dork’ ‘loser.’ Oh, and my personal favourite was ‘lesbian.’ Fortunately, I didn’t care and I had a sharp enough mouth at a young age that when people—and by people, I do mean guys—said that to me, I would just retort with,‘First of all, being a lesbian is not an insult. Secondly, being smart or curious doesn’t make me a lesbian. What did you learn at football camp?’ Girls teased me as well and that was a bit hurtful. Mostly, they were concerned that I would be seen as a lesbian.”

SD Holman’s photography series “BUTCH: Not Like The Other Girls” is bad ass.

The cast and crew of Faking It is back at work for their second season. YOU GET AWAY FROM HER, GREG SULKIN.

A comic at the Edinburgh Festival has an ode to the comedy of Sandra Bernhard.

Syleena Johnson is proud of her R&B Divas co-star Monifah for getting married to her partner on the show.

“I have great respect for [Monifah] and Terez for allowing the world in. It’s a very personal thing they have decided to share with everyone. I know for a fact [Monifah] was afraid at first. She wasn’t certain she wanted to show everyone her life, but she did.”

It was beautiful and I’m so glad Monifah and Terez allowed us to share in their big day.

Oh, Whitney Cummings. Wearing sneakers doesn’t make you a lesbian.

T Magazine has a great feature on female directors and Lisa Cholodenko is one of the chosen few. A quote:

“When I started making films, there was no gay marriage, and these issues weren’t front and center at all, so I feel like the global landscape has probably changed quite a lot in that time.”
