Morning Brew – Maria Bello on why she came out

Good morning! It’s Christmas Eve Eve. I’m pretty jazzed about the holiday, but I do want to tell you guys something. I recommended Tomboy Tailors in my Butch Fashionplate Gift Guide this year, and I hope none of you listened to me because, man, am I disappointed in their service. (I should have read the Yelp reviews!) Suffice to say I’m trying to get refunded for goods never rendered and my wife is without the kick ass Christmas gift I thought I’d be giving her. It makes me really sad when I’m trying to champion a lesbian-owned company, especially one making suits for women in our community, and they don’t come through. I just wanted to say I’m sorry if I led any of you in the wrong direction, as I was duped myself. Moving on! Kate McKinnon did a fabulous Billie Jean King on SNL this weekend, but she also brought back her impression of Jane Lynch for Celebrity Family Feud.

Maria Bello wrote a follow-up piece to her original Modern Love column in The New York Times where she addresses why she came out when she did and how she thinks a lot of headlines about her being bisexual or lesbian are wrong. Here’s what she said about “why now?”:

This past summer I thought I was going to die. Unknown to me, a parasite had invaded my body during my time in Haiti and begun eating away at me from the inside. As I struggled in the hospital to stay alive, I learned that waiting to do something isn’t always an option. In a moment, everything could end, and my stories would be lost – stories of love, partners, miracles and madness that filled hundreds of notebooks beneath my bed.

I’m so glad she’s OK now, and that she felt compelled to be honest about her relationship with her 12-year-old son. Were you one of the lesbians kissing their girlfriends under the mistletoe in Shanghai this weekend? If so, you are my hero. Forbes writes about how straight ally programs are “transforming the workplace.” You might have one or two of your own where you work. In the best news ever, the two imprisoned Pussy Riot members have finally been set free! They haven’t changed a bit, either: As Nadezhda Tolokonnikova walked outside she yelled “Russia without Putin!” Congrats to Dot-Marie Jones on marrying her partner Bridget over the weekend.

And another congrats goes out to this brave lesbian couple who wed in Uganda despite the second passing of the anti-homosexuality bill. Ellen DeGeneres would like to appear in the Bridesmaids sequel and I am totally OK with that as long as she doesn’t play the character she did in Mr. Wrong.

Here Ellen is with director Paul Feig behind-the-scenes of their brilliant Oscars promo.

It looks like X-Men fans will not get their Rogue in the next film. Anna Paquin’s brief appearance in the upcoming movie has been cut. Boo. Did you ever watched MTV’s Undressed? It’s fun to read the oral history over on Vulture. Katie Aselton talks about her role on the show:

I was a lesbian co-ed. I think my name was Lisa, and my big storyline was, my little sister was coming to visit, and I had to keep my gay relationship a secret from her and it was torture. And then I finally told her and she loved me anyway. But for a 20-year-old kid from Maine, this was huge – I had only been going out for ingĂ©nue roles. For me it was like, “Omigod, I can really sink my teeth into this one.” [Laughs] It was one of those things that sort of cemented what I wanted to do.

(Actually her character’s name was Kim.) Two other lesbian stories discussed: “Twins” (one gay and one straight) switched places for a day, and “lesbians in a hot tub.” Here’s Damon Lindelof on writing that scene:

And I remember being terrified by feeling like I needed to be really non-lascivious. I didn’t want to propagate stereotypes that heterosexual men just wanted to see women making out with each other. I wanted it to be real and grounded. And I tried writing that version of it, and the response back was like, “They need to be making out after three lines of dialogue. There’s way too much chatting here.”

Damon was tapped into lesbians better than he thought! Supermodel/DJ Eve Salvail appeared on the web series Sez Me recently where she answered questions from the drag queen host as well as a very young girl.

Slate guesses what some famous poets might smell like in fragrance form, including Elizabeth Bishop and Sappho. I’d wear their scents! Just a note that we’ll only be posting a few things a day during the holiday (Christmas Eve through New Years Eve) so there’ll be no Brew until the new year. My resolution is to keep it awesome for you at all times. MTV’s True Life is looking for lesbians to participate in an upcoming episode called “I Want My Ex Back.” If that sounds like you and you’re between the ages of 18 and 28, send your story to [email protected].
