Morning Brew – Tue. July 24: Jon Stewart tackles Chick-fil-a’s homophobia, Fiona returns to “Degrassi”

Good morning, Brewbies. As I mentioned yesterday, Trish Bendix is at TCA’s summer press tour sussing out all the very best queer lady entertainment news. For up-to-the-minute updates, you should definitely follow her on Twitter (@TrishBendix). Yesterday, she got some scoop on Glee and started an airline that only admits pug and pug owners as passengers, I think.

Last night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart tackled recent homophobic statements by The Boy Scouts of America and Chick-fil-a boss Dan Cathy, who said last week that he was “guilty as charged” of opposing same-sex marriage.

Now I just want some Girl Scout cookies and waffle fries.

Fiona was finally back on last night’s Dagrassi, and even though Imogen was a little squirrelly about going public with their relationship, Fiona made me want to high five her when she went up against hockey team captain Mike Dallas, who apparently things Fiona and Imogen are too pretty to be lesbians.

Fiona: I’m flattered, but not interested.

Dallas: Well, I love me a challenge.

Fiona: And I love me girls.

The school is also staging a gay remake of Romeo and Juliet, which should be a good time. You can watch full episodes of Degrassi at TeenNick.com.

Pretty Little Liars is all new tonight with an episode written by Andy Reaser and directed by gay lady showrunner Marlene King. The title is “crazy,” which makes sense because this sneak peek is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.

Did you scream at the end? I screamed at the end. Also, this is the last Paige-less episode for the rest of the season. Lindsey Shaw tweeted to say Paige will be back from 3.08 through the rest of the summer!

Lesbian film Mosquita y Mari took home several awards at Outfest. It won the Audience Award for Outstanding First U.S. Dramatic Feature Film, and star Fenessa Pineda won the Grand Jury Award for Outstanding Actress in a Feature Film. During the ceremony, judges praised Pineda by saying: “This actress brought nuance and subtlety to a fresh coming of age story. [She] beautifully capture[d] the fleeting moments of transition from innocence to curiosity to self-discovery.”

Sasha Alexander was interviewed on E!’s Fashion Police, and of course they asked her about the lesbian subtext on Rizzoli & Isles. She said:

You know what? We didn’t encourage it and then people caught onto it. I think we’re just really touchy women. People sort of glob onto that moment and drink to it. It’s like a drinking game. Anything we do they drink, they do shots.

Oh, Sasha, don’t be silly. Anything you do, we write fan fiction. It’s like getting drunk in a whole other way.
