Your Weekly Women to Listen To: Zap Mama, En Vouge, Rachael Cantu and more

Good afternoon everybody! Today has really run away from me for some reason — I think mostly because I spent a good chunk of time getting lost looking at different bands on the internet. Also, I’m trying to figure out if I think Nancy Pelosi is a hot older lady or not. I’m pretty sure all signs are pointing to yes. Alright I’ll stop being a creep (for now). Here’s some music!

File Under: Dance-inducing riot grrrl punk

From: Mexico City, Mexico

For Fans Of: Le Tigre, Bratmobile, The Plasticines, amusement park fun houses, glockenspiel, boobs or Powerpuff Girls made to look like boobs, pissing off your parents.

Bonus: I mean honestly, the background image of her MySpace page is bonus enough. Powerpuff Girls with boob faces — it doesn’t get much better than that.

File Under: Indie rock, sometimes trance-folk, singer/songwriter

From: Bulgarian-born, living in St. Petersburg, Florida

For Fans Of: Ellie Goulding’s cover of Robyn’s “Be Mine,” Kings of Leon, Fleetwood Mac, wearing scarves indoors, Lissie, old CK ads.

Bonus: Geri is offering some great free downloads at her ReverbNation page.

File Under: Experimental electro, post-punk, weird-core

From: Brooklyn

For Fans Of: Aerea Negrot, Grace Jones, multi-media performance art, Peaches, Exit Through The Giftshop.

Bonus: I actually found out about this band through Kathleen Hanna’s fantastic blog.

File Under: Angst rock, riot grrrl, acoustic-punk, metal

From: San Francisco

For Fans Of: L7, The Donnas, Converse, safety pins as a fashion statement, Schlitz beer, kickball, tube socks.

Bonus: Do yourself a favor and promise me (OK, so you’re doing me a favor — but trust me it will pay off) you will listen to multiple songs of theirs. Like, keep their page open and just listen to the entire thing. Their sound changes from song to song so just stick with it and you’ll find something you enjoy, or you might enjoy everything!

File Under: Four-part (sometimes three-part) soul and R&B harmonies with a better working-relationship than Destiny’s Child

From: California

For Fans Of: Destiny’s Child, SWV, Mary Mary, Christina Aguilera’s “Candyman,” apple pie, car rides with the windows rolled down.

Bonus: Their awesome song, “Don’t Let Go (Love)” was featured in the awful movie Set It Off in which Queen Latifah very convincingly played a lesbian gangster.

File Under: Electro-pop, indie disco

From: Netherlands

For Fans Of: The Ting Tings, CSS, Kelis, fist-pumping, Fischerspooner, metallic fingernail polish, confetti, dancing everywhere.

Bonus: Thank you to AE reader Sarah for the suggestion! Her Myspace page says she’s ready to “rock your bra off!” which I totally support.

File Under: Neo-soul, pop, funk, R&B

From: England

For Fans Of: Alicia Keys, Nikki Costa, Adele, Macy Gray, American Idol, long flowy “hippie” skirts, rich desserts.

Bonus: Joss apparently played a lesbian in a 2008 British rom-com called Snappers. I guess I’ll have to add that to my Netflix queue.

File Under: Singer/songwriter, indie, folk, adorable

From: The OC

For Fans Of: Annie Lennox, Holly Miranda, Reddelicious, friendship bracelets, giving gifts for no particular reason, Ani Difranco’s “She Says,” feelings.

Bonus: Not only is she a gal pal, she’s also totally gay with AfterEllen.com favorite, Liz Feldman!

File Under: Pop goes the world, soul, ’60s R&B, disco

From: Korea

For Fans Of: The Pussycat Dolls, Girls Aloud, Forever 21 (the store), mini-dresses, bar mitzvah and wedding dances, cuteness.

Bonus: I was able to give them their first American interview for the web! The girls were very sweet, all taller than me and kind of taught me how to do their “Nobody” dance.

File Under: Afro-jazz, soul, funk, sex in the kitchen

From: Born in the Congo, raised in Belgium

For Fans Of: Erykah Badu, G. Love, Macy Gray, Angelique Kidjo, branching out, A Different World, I’d even say Kelis!

Bonus: Founder and frontwoman Marie Daulne has infused her African roots and European upbringing into this uniquely soulful music. Also, she looks kind of like a mixture of Jada Pinkett Smith and Janelle Monae – which is a total bonus.

That’s all for this week, enjoy these suggestions until next week and if you’ve got your own suggestions feel free to send me a private message!
