Your Weekly Women to Listen to: Warpaint, Neon Hitch, The Ettes and more

Dragonette

File Under:
Pop electronic to move your tushy to

From: Toronto

For fans of: Amanda Blank, Peaches, Robyn, Scissor Sisters, breakin’ it down!

Bonus: They once made a very lesbian music video for the song "I Get Around."

The Ettes

File Under:
Detroit garage rock and girl groups, cute dirty rock

From: Nashville

For fans of: The Raveonettes, The Kills, dirty rock with a bit of swing to it, motorcycles, black on black

Bonus: Their
song “Crown Of Age” is on the Whip It soundtrack,
which makes me think of Drew Barrymore, which makes me drool.

File Under:
One of the highlights of my entire weekend. Mia was spinning jams from Gossip and La Roux and, all of a sudden, Caitlin shared the stage and brought out the electric violin as an accompaniment.

From: NYC

For fans of: The hotness, taking something good and making it great, dance, electro

Bonus: I mean, isn’t the violin enough? If it’s not enough, let’s also take note that Mia is a fantastic name.

Warpaint

File
Under:
Shoegaze on caffeine, subtle rock, not subtle at all when
they’re live though. They were another highlight of my Lolla experience.

From: The City of Angels
For fans of: Electrelane, Here We Go Magic, Bat for Lashes

Bonus:
The amazingly beautiful Shannyn Sossamon was one of the original
founders (along with her sister, Jenny Lee Lindberg, who is still in the
band). They are so fly.

Dirty Projectors

File Under:
Computer rock, indie to the core, not for everyone

From: Brooklyn

For
fans of:
St. Vincent, Sleigh Bells, not knowing if you absolutely love
or hate a song, skinny jeans and flowing skirts, riding your bicycle,
hipsters

Bonus: They’ve got a killer (whale) of a duet with Björk called “Mount Wittenberg Orca." (That’s where the killer whale joke came in.)

Nneka

File Under:
Afro-beat, hip-hop, soul and even some acoustic singer/songwriter

From: Nigeria

For fans of: Erykah Badu, Andre 3000, swaying

Bonus:
I saw her play a tiny show at Lolla before heading to one of the main
stages. It was just Nneka, her guitar and a few people trying to win a
Toyota. She was fantastic, her voice strong and beautiful.

That
wraps up another week of Women to Listen to. Stay tuned for more next
week and let me know what you think of these ladies.
