Your Weekly Women to Listen to: Subtonix, Falu, Dhana and more

Happy Wednesday everybody! I’m still drying my tears after watching “the next Susan Boyle” from Korea’s Got Talent. If you haven’t seen the video yet, I suggest grabbing a box of Kleenex and taking the plunge.

And now, on to some music suggestions to get you through the rest of the week.

File Under: Goth-punk, riot grrl, surf punk

From: Cali

For Fans Of: Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Russ Meyer films, Bikini Kill, Joy Division, if Lydia Lynch, L7 and 7 Year Bitch moved to California.

Bonus: Erase Errata’s Jenny Hoyston was in the group for a while but unfortunately, as is what happens too often, the band is now defunct. They are all working on new projects though so that’s the silver lining. Oh, and my lesbro Scott introduced this group to me and this is why I love him.

File Under: Warm folk-pop making it hard to believe she grew up in such a cold climate.

From: The Arctic region of Quebec

For Fans Of: Lali Puna, Feist, Joan As Policewoman, Mazzy Star, nature, long flowing sundresses, tapestries, art galleries featuring landscape exhibitions.

Bonus: Her debut album came out yesterday and while I may have saved her to tell you about until today, there’s still time to stream her entire album over at Spinner.

File Under: Neo Soul elecronica, acid lounge, deep house

From: Atlanta via New Jersey

For Fans Of: Remixed jazz albums, Soul II Soul, Sade, Everything But the Girl, Matmos, Requiem for a Dream, listening to music in dark rooms, the Cirque du Soliel soundtrack.

Bonus: Her hit, “King of My Castle,” is slow and sexy enough to put on your after-pride parade hookup mixtape (everyone makes one of those, not just me right?).

File Under: Desi pop rock with those amazing voice lilts I just can’t wrap my head around

From: India (though now lives in NYC)

For Fans Of: Oddly enough, Evanescence, Slumdog Millionaire, samosa, Belly, The Craft soundtrack (which really kicked ass).

Bonus: Falu was asked to join Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack creator, A.R. Rahman, in singing “Jai Ho” at the Time Magazine gala in front of the likes of Michelle Obama and Oprah.

File Under: Soft dance pop

From: Born in Germany, raised in Europe

For Fans Of: Kylie Minogue, Sneaker Pimps, shows on the CW Network (i.e. Vampire Diaries, Nikita, an episode of 90210 where someone has an overdose but with sexy camera angles), Florrie, Sky Ferreira.

Bonus: Hat tip to my AfterEllen.com pal Mathilde for the suggestion! She happens to also be pretty hot and is multi-lingual, which adds to her hotness factor exponentially!

That’s all for this week my honey pies, check back here next week for another round of musicians to celebrate! If you can’t wait that long, feel free to follow me on Twitter!
