Only two of the four playoff teams needed a third game this year – Phoenix, Seattle and Atlanta head for the Conference Finals later this week (schedule TBA). The Indiana Fever and New York Liberty, as expected, are headed for a third game Wednesday. It will be a scorcher, for sure.
To no one’s surprise, the Defensive Player of the Year award went to Tamika Catchings for plays like this:
Catchings led the WNBA in steals for a record sixth time with 77 – her career total going into Sunday’s game was 708.
Catchings also headlines the 2010 WNBA All-Defensive Team, the only player to be named to the first team every year since the inception of the honor (2005 — 2010). Angel McCoughtry, Sylvia Fowles, Tanisha Wright and Cappie Pondexter also received All-Defensive honors.
What’s amazing is to see the names on the All-Defensive Second Team: Lauren Jackson, Rebekkah Brunson, Sancho Lyttle, Lindsay Harding, Tully Bevilaqua and Katie Douglas. Those are some tough defenders — the caliber of players in the WNBA just keeps getting better.
