We’re finally going to see some lesbians on Disney Channel

When networks like ABC Family and Nickelodeon offer up dozens of LGBT storylines every year, it’s easy to forget that not all “family-friendly” TV-makers are comfortable with gay TV characters. Disney Channel, for example, has always been notoriously silent when it comes to gay stuff (even though the channel is owned by the same corporation that owns ABC Family, ABC, and SoapNet, three of the gay-friendliest places on TV). But there’s encouraging news on the horizon. My buddy Ed Kennedy from our brother site, TheBacklot, emailed me last night to alert me to the news that Good Luck Charlie is adding a lesbian couple to its final season. The couple will be the first-ever scripted gay characters to make it to Mickey Mouse TV.

Good Luck Charlie is currently in the process of casting the lesbian couple, who will appear as the parents of one of Charlie’s playdates. According to TV Guide:

When the kid arrives, the Duncans learn that Charlie’s pal has two moms. That’s fine, but the potential new friendship is put to the test as one mom chats with Amy, and the other is stuck listening to Bob’s dull stories … The episode will air in early 2014 as part of Good Luck Charlie‘s final season. Because Good Luck Charlie is coming to a close, the characters are only expected to appear in this one episode.

TV Guide’s article also hilariously notes that the storyline is being developed “under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors,” by which I’m sure they mean that they’re watching hours and hours and hours of Degrassi, Pretty Little LiarsThe Fosters, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

Seriously, though, this is really big news. It’s long overdue, but the ball has to start rolling somewhere.

Up next: We’re looking at you Sesame Street and Cartoon Network. (Bert/Ernie, Princess Bubblegum/Marceline. We know.)
