“Weeds” rolls to a stop with Season 8

Grab the munchies and fire up the kick sticks, Showtime hit Weeds is about to zoom into television history. Season 8, which starts July 1, is the show’s last. Weeds had plenty of highs and lows the past few seasons and I’m a little relieved that this season will bring Nancy’s misadventures to a close. But the contributions of the show in terms of overall cable programming can’t be understated. When Weeds premiered, it was unlike anything else on the air. Its success paved the way for Showtime’s other original series, many of which are female fronted.

Showtime entertainment president David Nevins released a statement saying that the network wanted to honor the show and its fans by giving it time to wrap up the story.

Weeds has been a seminal series,” said Nevins. “It had a groundbreaking run; entering its eighth season, it’s one of the longest-running comedies in the history of cable. We all felt that it was the right time and right way to end it. It was very important to us that we bring the story of Nancy Botwin and her family to a satisfying conclusion for the devoted fans that have spent years supporting this series. Jenji [Kohan] has managed to surprise us every step of the way and I am confident in her plan for a spectacular series end.” Season 7 ended on a cliffhanger: The extended Botwin family gathered around a table outside their new Connecticut home to make peace with one another. As Nancy proposed a toast to a new beginning, we saw each member of the family in the crosshairs of an unknown shooter’s rifle and, as the glasses clinked, a shot rang out. Showrunner Jenji Kohan told EW.com that Season 8 quickly resolves the mystery, and fans will see a time jump and a return to the suburbs. But the writers haven’t decided yet how to end Nancy’s story. “We wrack our brains every year for crazy cliffhangers and we’re trying to figure out how to top ourselves,” she said.

That won’t be a small feat. The Season 8 teaser provides a quick history of where Nancy’s been so far. Teasers earlier in the year suggested that Nancy took a bullet from the sniper, but I’ve seen no confirmation of that. Whatever happened, the incident has inspired Nancy to try to be a better, non-drug-pushing kind of mom. We’ll see how long she can last without starting a new weed garden – or sharing her personal garden with someone who can help her get ahead. I only hope we get to hear Little Boxes again before the series ends.
