Watch now! VICE films the plight of LGBTQI Jamaicans

To say Jamaica is an unfriendly place for anyone who identifies as LGBTQI is an understatement. Although it’s not technically illegal to be gay or trans, hate crimes, violence and general discrimination are not only tolerated but encouraged by those in power. VICE’s new series Young and Gay: Jamaica’s Gully Queens is largely about the community of “trans girls and gay men” living in what is called “the gully,” there is one small segment with a lesbian.

About 18 minutes in, Angeline Jackson of Quality of Citizenship Jamaica spoke about the corrective rapes happening to her and the lesbian and bisexual women of her community. The police, she says, think queer women “get what they deserve.”
