These days, many television shows have been trying to use the overwhelming popularity of social mediums like Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr to their advantage. ABC Family shows flash (hilarious) hashtags in the corner of the screen to encourage people to live-tweet the action. Some shows use it to troll fandoms. Others just haven’t quite figured out what they’re doing yet.
What they all should be doing is looking to Orphan Black. Their social media team is owning the internet. Their Tumblr page feels like it’s actually written by people who use Tumblr, their tweets are always hilarious and appropriate, they upload videos you YouTube regularly, and now they’ve even taken over Instagram.
They also know how to keep our interest in season two piqued, even though we’d all be waiting with bated breath without their teasing. Last week, they announced that they were going to release a new Season 2 promo every day for eight days.

I don’t know why eight. I’ve been trying to figure out if it’s a significant number or not (because I’m insane). We know of 10 clones total, but only four are definitely alive (I’m not 100% convinced Helena is dead). Then I was like, maybe it’s eight because we have seen eight clones, however briefly. Beth, Sarah, Alison, Cosima, Katja, Helena, Rachel…WAIT THAT’S ONLY SEVEN. (It’s possible I’m overthinking it. It’s likely they just had eight clips. Or wanted to post one a day from Wednesday to Wednesday.)
Whatever their reasoning, they promised eight sneak peeks, and eight sneak peeks they provided. And I’ve rounded them up just for you.
You know what else I did for you? I decoded the binary that flashed at the end of each video, because I noticed that they’re all different. You can call me Geek Monkey.
Sneak Peek #1: Tatiana Maslany condescending Tatiana Maslany and Tatiana Maslany attacking Tatiana Maslany, which surprises Tatiana Maslany. (p.s. The clone Rachel refers to as “Sarah” is wearing Sarah’s clothes/accent, but Cosima’s eye makeup. Tricky.)
Binary: I am large, I contain multitudes.
Sneak Peek #2: COSIMA. DELPHINE. FEELINGS. AHH. HASHTAG SAVE COSIMA.
Binary: Will you prove already too late?
Sneak Peek #3: So much for the Neighborhood Watch.
Binary: For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
Sneak Peek #4: Whose side are you on, Paul?!
Binary: Do you guess I have some intricate purpose?
Sneak Peek #5: WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? Are you Kira’s father? If so, what role do you have in all this? Or is this a flashback? Sarah doesn’t look punk enough for this to be a flashback, right?
Binary: I and this mystery, here we stand.
Sneak Peek #6: Felix comforts Alison about being a murderer by omission.
Binary: All truths wait in all things.
Sneak Peek #7: Cosima sasses Rachel, then Rachel deals a LOW-BLOW by mentioning her MYSTERIOUS DISEASE.
Binary: I do not talk of the beginning or the end.
Sneak Peek #8: Sarah shouts, “NO COPS!” which promptly causes the cops to arrive.
Binary: I talk wildly, I have lost my wits.
The binary messages are all (situationally appropriate) quotes from Walt Whitman‘s “Song of Myself.”
HOW FREAKING COOL IS THAT? Goodness gracious, I love this show and everyone involved in it.
Eight days, eight clips, eight secret messages, EIGHT HUNDRED QUESTIONS.
We still have 44 days to wait between now and the Season 2 premiere, so who knows what that wild and crazy social media team will graciously give us in the meantime.
Which promo was your favorite? What do you think Season 2 has in store?
