Cynthia Nixon declares LGBT people “moral leaders” at GLAAD Awards

Last week at GLAAD’s 21st annual Media Awards in New York, out actress Cynthia Nixon was honored with the Vito Russo Award, presented each year to a gay media representative who has worked to make a difference in LGBT activism.

Following an introduction by Sex and the City creator Michael Patrick King, Nixon gave an inspiring speech about LGBT people as moral leaders. At one point, Nixon declared, “I’ve been straight, and I’ve been gay and gay is better.”

In the rousing speech, Nixon also touch on the painful political setbacks faced by LGBT people over the last year but made explained why she was still hopeful about our continued progress. Citing the attitude of her 13-year old daughter as a reference point, Nixon noted that the rigid categories of gay and straight are breaking down, being replaced by the new categories of “Gay-positive” and “What’s your problem?”
