So your gay and you love video games. Guess what? Your not the only one, even though sometimes it may feel like it. LGBT gaming groups are popping up all over the country and internationally. Being an avid gamer myself and of the homosexual persuasion, I was happy to see an accepting and welcoming community forming online. It was even more amazing to find out that these groups actually meet offline for social gatherings. Real life interaction with other people may not be what most think of when it comes to the gaming community, but that is how gaymers roll.
What is a Gaymer you ask? Wikipedia defines it as “an umbrella term used to refer to the group of people who identify themselves as gay and have an active interest in the video game community.” The term is most widely used on the social site, Reddit, which is used as a meeting place to discuss everything from the hottest new game to the latest meetup.
Recently Sydney Gaymers made headlines for being the first LGBT gaming group to march in the Sydney Mardi Gras parade. Comprised of over 400 members, Sydney Gaymers was formed to create a safe space to meet like-minded people and escape the sometimes abusive culture of gaming. The idea of safety in numbers has spawned groups in almost every major city in the US. NYC Gaymers have their own night at Vlada Lounge in Hell’s Kitchen called Hardcore. A 21+ party with booze, conversation and gaming that definitely looks like a good time. And San Francisco recently hosted the first gay gaming convention, GaymerX, which was founded by the creator of the site GaymerConnect.
The one commonality I came across when scouring the different gaymer groups from Austin to Chicago was a lack of lesbian members. Don’t get me wrong, I did see the token lady thrown in here and there when looking through various meetup pictures. Something needs to be done about this. We need to unite! Join a local group or form your own meetup and start a gaymer scene in your area. Let’s show the gay gaming community that lesbians are bad ass gaming chicks that will annihilate you in Halo, but still be cordial. Feel free to leave your gamer tags below to connect with your fellow gaymers.
