GaymerCon is coming
In what might be the most exciting bit of LGBT-specific gaming news since BioWare decided to make its AAA RPGs (Mass Effect, Dragon Age) same sex romance inclusive, GaymerCon became a real thing that is actually happening – rejoice! A successful Kickstarter campaign was all that was needed to make the “first gaming and tech convention with a focus on LGBT geek culture” a reality for next August, and the organizers are hard at work planning the con. It’s slated to take place August 3-4th 2013, in San Francisco.
We’re turning the corner from the semi-official slow season to the insane frenzy of the fall “holiday” release schedule. Get your wallets (and meager “free time” expectations) ready.
First up is a game that actually came out yesterday, but Nintendo fans and 3DS gamers should jump right in: New Super Mario Bros. 2. It’s the latest in the nostalgia-spamming 2d “new” Super Mario series, which means it’s a 2d platforming adventure with about five helpings of Mario history thrown in. While we’re talking about games that have just come out, both Papo and Yo (PSN) and Dust: An Elysian Tail (XBLA) are getting rave reviews, so if you haven’t picked these up yet, take a look!
Competitive shooter fans should mark August 21 in their calendars – Counter Strike is slated to return with on PC, Mac, XBLA and PSN.
If you’re looking for something a little more… colorful on your downloadable platforms, the fresh, funky guitar controller-enabled shooter Retro/Grade is set to hit on PSN on August 21, the same day that adult-animation fighter Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure HD Ver. Hits the service. It’ll appear on XBLA on August 22. Rock Band Blitz – a goofy plastic controller-free version of the excellent rhythm-action series, is also coming to PSN (on August 28) and XBLA (on August 29), for your music game needs in a post SoundShapes world.
Football mainstay Madden NFL 2013 is out for all of the modern consoles – as well as the PS Vita – on the August 31.
September is shaping up to be rather exciting, though the bigger hitters will arrive a bit later on the month. For the first week, check out Mark of the Ninja on XBLA on September 7, and Zen Pinball 2 on PSN and PS Vita on September 1. Save your dollars otherwise for the smorgasbord coming down the fall pipeline.
