Vanity Fair’s year in lesbianish photos

The infamous Miley Cyrus portrait might be the talk of 2008, but Vanity Fair has produced so many other photographs this year that are way more worthy of discussion. The magazine recently compiled an online portfolio of their favorites from this year, and I have to say that I am thankful for photographers like Annie Leibovitz, whose contributions to celebrity photography bring out the best in some of our favorite women (and the controversy in the aforementioned Disney teen starlet).

Kate Winslet posed as lesbionic icon Catherine Deneuve? Magic. Also, please notice that she is unclothed. I knew I’d have to point that out to you.

Who cares about Robert Pattinson when Twilight co-stars/BFFs Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed are only interested in making eyes at each other while being photographed? They are the center of attention.

Toni Morrison, winner of the Nobel Prize winner in Literature. There doesn’t seem to be much concept behind this photo, obviously, but there doesn’t need to be one. She’s simply amazing on her own.

The heated debate over whether women can be funny turned into one of the best photospreads of the year. Sandra Bernhard, Wanda Sykes, Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman, Kristen Wiig, Jenna Fischer, and Amy Poehler were all involved. It’s like Vanity Fair plucked them from our hearts (or blog posts).

Every year, the magazine focuses on rising starlets with a cover story featuring the hottest young women. It looks like the gang’s all here, and we couldn’t agree more — although, I would have put Ellen Page and Emily Blunt together in a Kristen Stewart-Nikki Reed type situation, but that’s just me.

On screen, the Gossip Girl cast play scandalous and rich teenagers from the Upper East Side (or Brooklyn. See: Dan, Jenny and Vanessa). Off screen, they are scandalous and rich teenagers who are gossiped about as being gay and dating their co-stars — and we eat it all up.

Big hair, big lips, big… everything. This photo is not necessarily the most beautiful we’ve ever seen of Angelina Jolie, but it certainly got our attention, just like Ms. Jolie managed to do all of 2008.
