Jennifer Beals swaggers to “Castle” for a guest arc

Even if you’ve never watched an episode of ABC’s Castle, I’m willing to bet that you have something in common with the show’s main character Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion). Assuming, of course, that this inspires you.

Tonight is the first of a two-part story in which the exquisite Jennifer Beals guest stars as Sophia Turner, the sexy CIA agent that inspired character Clara Strike in Castle’s Derrick Storm novels.

Beal talked to reporters about her sweeps appearance in which the hunt for a killer threatens to get the U.S. involved in a war – and how her presence pushes a few buttons in Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic).

Sophia shows up when Castle and Beckett get involved in a murder case with a rogue CIA agent at its center. The agent is part of a much larger international investigation headed by Sophia, but her authority is limited by the fact that the case is on U.S. soil. Sophia sees the opportunity to add Beckett to her team to solve the case.

Here’s a clip.

My-my, Kate — jealous much?

TVLine asked Beals if Sophia has the kind of attitude government agent often bring to local crime scenes. “It’s ‘I’m CIA and I’m powerful,'” Beals said, “‘but my hands are tied at this juncture and I value your input. So let’s work as a team.”

While Sophia takes advantage of the chemistry between her and Castle (they had a romantic relationship in the past) in order to make progress in the case, Beals insists that the storyline is not about a love triangle.

“I just said to [showrunner Andrew Marlow] really clearly, I don’t want to have two women fighting over a man. I think this character has to be self-assured enough and mature enough that she knows who she is and how strong and attractive she is, and all those other things she may be … she knows very well this is a possible complication in [Rick and Kate’s] relationship, yet she will do whatever she needs to do to get whatever she wants to get.”

Playing another law enforcement officer so soon after her role as Teresa Colvin on The Chicago Code did give Beals a few headaches.

“I have to say that as soon as I got the gun on and had to lead the troops, I had to fight like mad not to do a Chicago accent,” Beals told TVGuide. “Teresa is definitely a scrapper and she’s good with strategy, but Sophia is in a whole other class. If there was a fight, my money would totally be on Teresa, but you cannot put anything past Sophia. She’s able to keep a lot of different puzzles in her head at the same time.”

We’d love nothing more that for Jennifer Beals to show up in a new TV show, but so far, she hasn’t found a winner in the pile of pilot scripts she has at home.

“I’m not interested in any of them. But I am working on an Internet series with Jon Avnet [for a YouTube channel focused on female-oriented drama] that I really am enjoying, and I have a film in the spring…. [A new series] would have to be something that I really enjoy, because when you’re working that 16-hour day, you don’t want to be going, “Why the hell am I doing this again?” The big goal is to want more than the paycheck. The real brass ring is to find something that has meaning. I need to get up in the morning and be excited to go to work.”

I don’t know about you, but whenever I catch a glimpse of the divine Ms. Beals, I just want more. Join me in petitioning the TV gods to find a series worthy of her power suits. Meanwhile, you can see Beals in Castle tonight and next week at 10 EST on ABC.
